Former Alabama offensive coordinator's six-year contract extension pays the same salary but, man, he can make a killing in incentives.

Florida Atlantic loves it some Lane Kiffin.

So much so that the Owls will give a $1 million bonus. All the football coach needs to do is have three straight 10-win seasons.

It is just one of the many inventive incentives in Kiffin's six-year extension with FAU, which was made official this week when school president Dr. John Kelly and athletic director Brian White signed off on the deal.

The Palm Beach Postobtained a copy of the contract via a public records request. The former Alabama offensive coordinator's annual salary will remain the same at $950,000 a year, but there are plenty of chances to make more money.

For a cool million all Kiffin must do is have three straight 10-win seasons.

FAU went 11-3 in Kiffin's first season with the school. His contract extension takes him through the 2027 season. According to USA Today's salary database, Kiffin was the third-highest paid coach in Conference USA last season and certainly one of the more popular ones.

Check out just some of the incentives in Kiffin's FAU contract:

  • $10,000 for losing the conference title game but receiving an at-large bowl bid
  • $20,000 if FAU makes the Conference USA title game
  • $40,000 for winning the conference title game
  • $50,000 retention bonus
  • $100,000 for making the CFP
  • $250,000 for winning a CFP semifinal game
  • $500,000 for a CFP title game appearance
  • $1 million for winning the national championship

Added bonuses could include:

• $50,000 for FAU ending the season ranked in the Top 25

• $100,000 for ending in the Top 10

• $1 million if FAU finishes three straight seasons as a Top 10 team.

Kiffin will earn an extra $10,000 if the football team finishes with an Academic Progress Rate of 940 or better and up to $250,000 if FAU finishes with a top 10 national APR for three consecutive seasons.

So if Kiffin has the most successful season in the history of the FAU program and reaches all his personal incentives that should be just about enough to pay the property tax on that house by the sea in Boca Roton.
