🏈 Lane Kiffin officially the new OC @ Alabama

Lame must be the best interview in the world. Seriously, how else could he land the jobs he's gotten?

"Yes sir, every place I've ever coached was worse when I left than when I arrived. I think I'm the man for the job."

USC was doomed when he was hired so that last sentence doesn't quite paint an accurate picture.

Here's something for you to chew on for a bit, Chief.

In 2009 we played six top 25 teams including four teams in the top 10. As I'm sure you recall, we finished the season with a game against the #1 team in the country, Florida.

That Tennessee team Kiffin coached has more success against the Tide than that #1 Florida team, more than the #9 LSU squad, more than the #7 Va Tech team, and more than the #2 Texas team when Bama played them in the BCSNC.

How many winning seasons has Tennessee had since 2007? One. Kiffin's 2009 squad.

With Al Davis in the picture I don't know if it's apropos to even mention his tenure in Oakland.

Over the years I've started numerous threads here laughing at the decisions he's made as a head coach. And, I've gotten some pretty damn good laughs out of those threads.

However, we didn't hire him as a head coach. We hired him as an offensive coordinator.

There is one fact I feel is undeniable. If we had an offensive coordinator hired with the same credentials but he wasn't named Kiffin folks would be talking about how good of a hire this has been.

Terry, Kiffin left them decimated. They had scholarship reductions. Yet, you expect them to win more after he is gone? Seriously, you've got to get your facts straight when you argue. I have no qualm with his x's and o's. You're going to tell me he's worth the baggage though? I seriously thought you were more intelligent than that.

I've hated Tennessee for more years than many on this board have lived. I have LOVED listening to the Kiffin stories and laughing. It ain't so funny now. This is the last I'll say about it. Pull this thread up in three years. At minimum, minimum, this hire will bring about secondary violations - multiple violations. Let's see if you like the hire then. I'll leave it at that.

The NCAA came down hard on Garza with a show-cause penalty. They were put on probation, had a few official visits removed, and they had to reduce their number of evaluation days by three or four (leaving them with 160+ still.)

You're telling me to get my facts straight here? Careful now...

There were some secondary violations that occurred in Knoxville when he was coach there—a total of six. We had 16 at Bama during the same period.
BTW, I don't recall any scholarship reductions and after searching around for a few minutes can't find a thing that says they lost scholly's.

Got a link to back these facts you say you have straight? :icon_twisted:

I'm not too worried about the offense. I'm worried about the probation to follow.

Its a very valid concern. Just to keep Kiffin under close supervision and out of the public eye will be a full time job. He's used to being able to say what he wants, when he wants. I'm grabbing some popcorn cause next season will be an interesting dynamic to see unfold.

Kiffin wants to get back to being a head coach.... This is his opportunity. In order for him to do that he must be successful here. For that reason he has motivation to keep his head down, do a good job, and win games.

Absolutely right. Kiffin may be an a$$, but he is no dummy. He is still young and I believe he knows this is his chance to regain credibility and reputation so he can get another chance at HC someday.

As Terry mentioned, he was doing quite well at UT all things considered, and remember, if it weren't for two Cody FG blocks, they would have beaten us - at home - that year.

In addition, I believe the "scandal" up there was with hostesses and recruits. Don't remember anything about him cheating on Layla.

Last thing... There is no question he is an a$$ and he comes across as arrogant (so does CNS) but for those who condemn his football skills, I really think that is misguided. If CNS can keep his mouth in check, then we will all see soon enough that this was an excellent hire.

I won't waste my time. I'm done worrying about him. If Bama wants the probation, okay by me. It won't affect me in the least. The NCAA will not let Alabama skate like they did UT. You forget, I'm up here in the middle of this crap. You do not know how many stories I heard about Kiffin and everything that never got reported. I'm through with it though. I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

"Won't waste your time?" Come on now, you were pretty damn quick to tell me to get the facts straight.

I'm well aware of where you are. We've had discussions where that's been mentioned. I also understand that likely has an influence on how you think.

I doubt there are many stories told in TN that I've not heard just as I doubt many stories told aren't all the truth. I do find it noteworthy that Hamilton/UT threw all of those allegations on Kiffin and then the NCAA cleared him.

After spending over a week with Saban, don't you think Kiffin understands what's required? That pretty well encapsulates how I'm looking at this. I tend to believe Saban has not only been very specific with what's required as well as possessing the ability to keep Lane in line.

Is it logical for me to assume if you think Kiffin's going to be trouble you don't believe Saban "has this?"

Umm the had scholarship reductions from the Carroll era, so how exactly did Kiffin leave them decimated? He didn't put them on more probation or more scholarship reductions and lee recruited a top 25 class damn near every year he was there. So, having an expectation of them winning more would be a fair expectation

OT, once again, you're talking about something where you have no clue what happened.

I chalked up your comments about Saban as fan exuberance all the time feeling empathy for you because you were being misled so badly. With a degree of reservation I accepted your opinions on Suddes as a case where you didn't know him, much less what he brings to a football program. Now, with Applewhite, my suspicion is you're talking about of your ass.

Applewhite didn't leave because Saban was a control freak. Applewhite left because he was being demoted at Bama and he was offered a position at Texas—a step backwards in his coaching career. In reality, it would mean it was his second demotion in his first year in Tuscaloosa if he had ended up staying in on our staff.

No. Applewhite was a co-OC at Texas before he became the sole OC. Yes, he was also in charge of coaching RBs, but Mack knew that he was getting Applewhite to be the eventual OC.

You cant in one hand claim that Kiffin was responsible for USC having reduced scholarships (which they got because of Carroll not Kiffin) and then tell someone to get their facts straight and question their intelligence at the same time.

It gets richer with every post, OT.

It's one thing telling me how things happen at Bama, but now you're trying to tell me things at TX and you're missing the boat here, as well?

In 2008, when he was hired at TX, he was hired as the running back coach. He was then promoted to co-offensive coordinator. (Now, I could go to the point of citing articles from sites like ESPN, but I'll stick to the official Texas athletic web site.)

That was actually agent related and fell on Todd McNair.
