Notes You Need To Know

  • During SEC play, five UA players are averaging 10.7 points per game or better, helping the Tide to an average of 80.6 ppg, which leads the league. Alabama also tops the conference in threes made per game (9.6) while ranking fourth in three-point percentage (32.2 percent) in conference action.
  • While Alabama's play on the offensive end has remained consistent throughout the season, the biggest improvement has come on the defensive end of the floor. During league play, the Tide enters the contest at Georgia tied for third in three-point field goal percentage defense (27.7 percent), is fourth in field goal percentage defense (39.3 percent) and leads the conference in defensive rebounds per game (29.6).
  • Entering the Georgia game, Alabama has a record of 1-5 in games decided by six points or less this season which includes each of the last two contests (69-68 vs. Tennessee and 82-78 vs. Arkansas) and three SEC games in all (at Florida 104-98 in double overtime). Additionally, UA dropped a one-point decision vs. Penn (81-80) in the season opener and a two-point loss at Penn State (73-71). In three of those five defeats, the Tide played without its best defender Herbert Jones. In all, those five losses have been by a combined 14 points.
  • Alabama enters the contest having played the toughest schedule in the SEC, according to the latest NET Rankings that were released on Feb. 7. The Crimson Tide boasts the No. 18 overall strength of schedule which tops the conference, while the No. 36 non-conference SOS is second in the SEC only to Florida (No. 32).
  • UA is tied for second in the nation in fewest games played against teams ranked above 200 in the NET, which also includes three additional SEC teams (Arkansas, Florida and Mississippi State). West Virginia leads the nation and has played only one game versus a team with a 200-plus NET ranking

UA also leads the SEC in threes made (226), threes attempted (647) and three-point field goal percentage (.349).
  • It was announced prior to the Arkansas game (Feb. 1) that junior Herbert Jones fractured his left wrist and is out indefinitely. When factoring in graduate senior Beetle Bolden's four games missed and ACL injuries prior to the season to forwards James Rojas and Juwan Gary, both of which were expected to play significant minutes this season, injuries have cost UA players a total of 51 games this season.
  • According to Ken Pomeroy's "Luck" statistic, the Crimson Tide ranks 337th out of 353 D-I teams. The category takes into account "the deviation between a team's actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies. Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them. Those that do will be viewed as lucky (or unlucky)."

smh this team is digressing. I understand injuries are a problem none the less they are going backwards. Any momentum they gained from the 4 game win streak is long gone. Hope they find a spark but right now they are just not very good.

Bama 105 - 102. Gritty win. Seems like our offense his isolate with Lewis and let him go one on one. Lewis had 37 points. Petty had 20 with some clutch rebounds and free throws. Not sure how Lewis has any gas in the tank.

Alabama scored the most points in a true road game in program history

ATHENS, Ga. – The Alabama men's basketball team defeated the Georgia Bulldogs, 105-102, in overtime Saturday night at Stegeman Coliseum. With the win, the Crimson Tide (13-10, 5-5) notched the most points scored in a true road game in program history, toppling the former record of 102 points set on two different occasions.

The 207 combined points scored marked the third-most in the Alabama record books and the most combined points between UA and an opponent since 1971.

Sophomore Kira Lewis Jr. poured in a season-high 37 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field, 3-of-6 from deep, and 10-of-15 from the charity stripe. It was his second 30-point game of the season (had 30 points in the season-opener against Penn) and his team-leading seventh game of 20 or more points. He scored 25 of his game total in the second half and overtime. Junior John Petty finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Three other Crimson Tide players reached double figures as redshirt freshman Javian Davis finished with 13 points and eight boards, graduate senior Beetle Bolden added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists and freshman Jaden Shackelford collected 10 points, marking his seventh consecutive double-digit scoring game.

Georgia was led by Sahvir Wheeler who finished with 24 points and a game-high eight assists, while Rayshaun Hammonds added 20. Freshman sensation Anthony Edwards was held in check for the most part as the league's second-leading scorer finished with 14 points and a game-high 12 boards on the night.

Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments

"This was a tough road win that we needed badly after giving away the two straight games at home. I thought our guys showed a lot of character. To come in here and fight like we did on the road was great for our guys. We gave up a big run to start the second half, but the guys got it back together. I thought the chatter in the timeouts was good from our guys. We have some good leadership from our leaders. It was great to get a road win. I know Petty and Kira would love to go 100 percent from the line, but they made enough free throws for us to get the win. I am really proud of those two. I thought Petty's defense on Edwards was great and Kira was a floor general tonight – probably the best he has played all year to be honest with you. We showed a lot of fight. Georgia is a good team and showed a lot of fight, too. I know Edwards was a little under the weather and he played big minutes for them which turned it into a really good game for both teams. We are fortunate to walk out tonight with win."

Nate finds himself in near the same position Nick was in 2007. He's trying to coach and convince a roster to play a better brand of BB and play smarter in doing so. Injuries have taken a toll on this group for sure but those that play have to play smarter going forward.

Better buckle up this coming week. Bruce will beat the sh*t out of Bama if at all possible. Payback. Year two should be interesting for Nate and Bama with an upgraded roster (perhaps) .

Watched the entire game. Had not been able to catch the last two home losses. They do miss Jones for sure. The team has lapses during games that manifest itself in lack of rebounds, turnovers and/or missed free throws that end up costing them. I posted one post during the game which was around the time the team had let UGA run out to a 12 point lead. Was frustrating to watch but they did not quit and fought back into the game.

Honestly I do not see a lot of offense other than isolate Lewis and let him create or dribble/drive and kick out. The kid is good and his shots were falling last night for a game and career high 37 points. Like 50+ stated hitting free throws on the front end of a 1-1 probably ends it in regulation.

With all this said, what gives me hope is a subtle thing that I saw Petty do. I think is was in OT. He was able to get a hand on an over the top pass to one of the UGA players. There was a timeout to review. Once it was announced the pass had gone off the UGA player, Petty was fist pumping the play. He seems to have bought in big time. He is giving much better effort and has been showing leadership. I believe this is a testament to Oats and his coaching staff. If he can keep them playing hard regardless of the result they will get there as a program. Unlikely to be this year but it will pay off in the future.
