🏈 Kiffins big Catch

"Instead he is going with a new head coach that has promised a quick jump into the upper echelon. Brown says he sees Tennessee now becoming the next USC."

This statement confuses me... Does he mean that like USC he as a superstar running back will get to live in a million dollar mansion and the NCAA will look the other way?

Or did he mean that Tennessee will always be over rated from now on, and there there will be a least one cupcake team to stick it to them every year keeping them out of grasp for the NC, but they will whine and bitch and moan about why they as a one loss team deserve it more than an undefeated team.

Is there some history with the kid that Im not aware of?

Here's another LINK regarding Brown and his history.

His whole recruitment has been a fiasco, and when you're supposed to be the top player in the country and your own coach wants you out of the program as soon as possible, you've got issues.

This kid's situation makes him almost like an alcoholic in the sense that, if he doesn't recognize that he has an attitude problem then he won't seek help. Instead, he'll go booze it up with his "friends" (Kiffin) who have the same issue (egotistical a-hole) and are less likely to judge him. IMO, it would take 3 or 4 years of guidance by a special type of coach at a great institution to adjust his attitude and bring him back in line with reality. UT has a great tradition, but the current state of their program and coaching staff is questionable at best. Going by Kiffin's performance to date, I just don't see UT as being a good situation for him. The wrong chemistry plus the current state of UT's OL means his decision could add up to be a disastrous one for his football career. What a shame.

On a side note, UT's defensive line is in pretty horrific shape as well. If I remember correctly, after this upcoming season, they'll have 7 defensive linemen on campus. Without double checking, I think at the end of this season they'll have:
6 offensive linemen
7 defensive linemen

Even if I'm off by a bit, that's a far far cry from being anything like USC.

It will be interesting to see how many linemen Kiffin goes after. He seems like the kind of guy that will be gung-ho about getting hot shot playmakers. Guys that won't be able to do anything if you can't control the LOS. Time will tell. We had some glaring depth issues as well when Saban first showed up. They have an incredible recruiting staff at UT but it's going to take some time IMO to patch this up.

That's a good pount. I'd expect them to really go after linemen on both sides for the 2010 group, especially juco types.

I looked at that back when we had a review of the Tampa 2 defense over on the blog.

At that point, I recall eight or nine on the roster and I know they signed two.

That was part of a conversation I had with a UT fan about a month ago. When he was talking about their upcoming explosive offense and I asked him about their offensive line he immediately said "we are moving some defensive lineman." Of course, my reply was "leaving what?"

If I recall correctly, they'll have the same number after this season...eight or nine along the DL. Seems like I remember three seniors on their depth chart.

Made me look at USC...they are carrying 15 on their roster for the O line right now...I think they only signed a couple.

BUT, 3 deep, like every other school wants to be...

This has all the ingredients for a bad cocktail. Bad that is for Tennessee.

What do you get when you mix a large fan base, starving for success; a glimmer of hope, in the form of a "good" recruiting class; the nation's top MEcentric recruit; and a new coach who has zero experience keeping the rouge busters at bay? Answer: Violations waiting to be caught by every other watchful eye in the nation's most competitive conference.

Lets face it, if Kiffin can't keep himself from breaking rules on a record pace, he won't be able to keep the Vol Nation and the likes of Brown from dropping a huge NCAA flavored terd into the Big Orange Punch Bowl.

Neither, he meant the University of South Carolina.

Hey Terry, what do you know what Cody Sullins? I'm guessing he's a walk-on, but for some reason rivals has him listed in their depth chart but not on the roster. I also noticed UTSPORTS.com has a couple players listed for the offensive line that aren't on the rivals pages (squad players/walk-ons I guess)

Interestingly enough, Carson Anderson is listed on the roster and not on the depth chart at the same position as Cody.

He and his brother were both walk-ons if I recall correctly. Joined the program in '04, I think. (either '04 and shirted in '05 or joined in '05) Twins, fwiw. Two of those players that are guys being moved...started on the defensive side of the ball and got moved to the OL.

Young, very little experience - Cody that is - and I don't think his brother has even made a travel roster as of yet.

I got a text from the most knowledgable UT fan I know in my area last night asking me if I wanted to meet up for a few later on this evening...thought no, since he suggested Applebees (then I realized his wife was probably shopping at the mall :D )...if I go, I'll ask more about him.

Yeah, I knew about his brother Cory... just couldn't figure out why Cody was listed on the depth chart and not the roster. Got me wondering if he had quit or something.

I know about a few guys that got moved to the offensive line. Askew and Brimfield come to mind. We are on here discussing their depth numbers, but the quality is pretty horrific as well. Once these seniors are gone, I don't think anyone outside of Ray Ray Johnson will be able to really contribute much. Dallas Thomas could do okay in pass protection (he was very impressive in high school) but I don't see him being able to do too much as a run blocker.

All I can come up with is maybe it's an oversight on Rivals part? Possibly because they didn't have either counted in the '04 or '05 class?

You know, when I first started looking at their lines at the end of the season '08 the first thing that crossed my mind was they looked a lot like ours did when we were under the effects of sanctions.

With the exception of a few of their back-ups, those guys would start for UAB but would struggle on a D-1 scholarshipped roster.

Here's another aspect I find interesting about the UT staff.

Their OC, Jim Chaney, is also sharing duties as the OL coach. Now, I realize Kiffin is the guy calling the plays -which we know the pro's and con's for that one- but I do find it interesting. His offense at Purdue wasn't known for a strong rushing attack - pro style attack which fits with Kiffin. But, he's going to be in serious need of some player development in their running attack especially given the point that their "play makers" are all ball carriers.

I see a good possibility for some mass confusion.

Of course, I also take the possibility the OC is in title only...take that in very serious consideration.

I may be missing something but he looks like another decent running back from the video, not the best I have seen from this year's class. Of course, when I look at video of a high school running back I have a picture in my mind of Noel Devines highlight films which are some of the best I have ever seen. Long story short, I don't see the hype about this kid.

I don't deny he looks like a great prospect based on his film.

What I do wonder is this.

I'll admit, I don't know a lot about the classification of the football program he played for in high school. Is it comparable to the programs like Hoover? Or, is it more of a school like Ariton?

It's Kansas. And, while I'm not holding a judgment on the class based on the state I can't help but think it's not the same talent level that some of the Florida kids run up against everyday.
