You want to talk about jumping on an opportunity and going after something hard?
On Wednesday, Lane Kiffin explained in detail to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio the SC pursuit of Penn State running back Silas Redd.

Here's how it went down, according to Lane.

"I picked up the phone, in true SC fashion and called one of our great donors Ted Jones at Fletcher Jones Mercedes and I called him when we were at the SoHo House for the PAC-12 dinner and he said, 'Let me guess, you're calling about Silas. Where y'at?'"

"So he sent his big ole Mercedes jet which was in Vegas to pick us up in LA. We got done with the PAC-12 meetings. We flew to White Plains, NY. It was myself, my dad, our running backs coach, our o-line coach."

"We called Coach Orgeron. He was in Louisiana. He got on a plane. Our defensive backs coach was in Nebraska. He got on a plane. The only two we couldn't get were our quarterbacks coach (Clay Helton). He was in Mexico because everybody was on vacation. Our receivers coach (Tee Martin) was on a cruise, so we tried to get a helicopter to go get him, but they wouldn't let us do it."

"We're in Norwalk, CT, up near you guys. We met at a Dunkin Donuts. Got our game plan, went into the house for a 3.5 hour presentation and flew back."

When you send six coaches cross country, it impact is undeniable. The fact is, the no-hesitation approach may be the difference in SC winning the PAC-12 and playing for the national championship.

Here's where I need help.

Can someone explain to me how to pick up a phone in "true SC fashion?"

^^ with checkbook in hand? maybe thats "true SC fashion"...

but good lord all that for Silas Redd? a good back but we're not talking about Marcus Lattimore or Trent Richardson or even LaMichael James here.

I'd say that's still left to be determined. I'm not saying a comparison to Trent is left to be determined. Players like him just don't come along every year. Same with the other two. But, he was ranked 30th in the nation in rushing last year. He was a 5 per carry guy at Penn State.

Speaking of USC's spending... seen the new Athletic facility - John McKay Center - $70m, 110,000 sq ft. Guy on my teams outta LA and a huge USC fan.

As far as Redd goes, he didn't put up 100 yd games against the bigger Big Ten schools, but he did have a better than decent avg as Terry suggests above. With this move, I can see Redd potentially being in NY come award time...not because of Matt either. I don't know what USC's OL looks like, but I know what the Pac-12 has in terms of D, and Redd will probably feast of those guys.

If he has boosters willing to let them hijacking his jet amd fly all around the country at the drop of a hat, wonder what else they do for recruiting. Lord! USC has Kiffin, Orgeron, and Tee Martin on staff... If only they could lure away Trooper...

You would think USC would be gun shy after the Reggie Bush debacle, but it appears they are still just a brash as ever.

I mean USC is on probation right now and Kiffin left a huge mess in Tennessee at yet here they are pushing the edge of the envelope.

Some things__- scratch that-___ Some people never change!

How do you see that?

I didn't realize I had bolded the second sentence as well. Sorry.

The pushing the envelope statement. N1UA isn't always available for Saban and neither is Bryant Jr's plane. We've got a few boosters who routinely "loan" theirs to the athletic department for recruiting purposes.

I just dont get y all the fuss was made for Redd... yes I know hes a solid back and USC was lacking in depth but you would think this guy is a Heisman hopeful or something. I mean lets not forget they already have a 1,000 yard back on the roster. This adds much needed depth but I dont think hes a "game changer". This isnt gonna be a Lendale White/Reggie Bush combination here.

Sure, but Coach Saban doesn't go on ESPN's Colin Cowheard Show and brag about it to a national audience, Kiffin does...

That is what I mean about being brash. Why draw that kind of negative attention to a program that is already under close scrutiny unless you just don't give a $^&* about what the NCAA thinks about you? It may not be exactly against the rules, but it certainly is not the kind of image the NCAA wants its members to portray.

And I didn't even address Kiffin swooping in to steal players from a program that has already been through what Penn State has been through.

Talk about kicking someone while they are down!

OT: I can't past your new sign pic without thinking Christmas! :icon_shaking:

I hope in the future when sanctions are handed down there are provisions built in that keep teams from grabbing players in situations like this. IF they are under restrictions, they should be restricted from situations like this one.
