🏈 Kickers?

All of his attempts were 40 yards or more but he is supposed to be the "long range kicker", if he cant make those why is he on scholarship? He was 2/5 on 40-49 yard FGs while Shelley was 2/6 on those kicks (with 2 of them being blocked) yet he is the one thats not supposed to be able to hit the long ones. Im alot more willing to forgive the 0/4 on 50+ yarders but again "long range kicker" here. If Shelley, the one that doesnt have near the leg as Foster, is doing just as well in those longer kicks what is he doing out there? I know he does the kickoffs too and thats fine but id much rather him do just that and stay off the field when it comes to kicking field goals, and if Griffith can do as good as him in kickoffs he shouldnt be out there period. Just my opinion.

Yot want to look at this is anything ther way, based on what you just said?

Shelley left us in worse field position because on those blocks. So, the nod still goes to Foster.

In Foster's defense, he only attempted 9 field goals last season. So he averaged less than 1 attempt per game. 4 of his 9 attempts were against LSU. People get into slumps, but he had no real opportunity to work through it. He had no confidence building 33 yarders, just the 44+ (maybe the number is a little lower than 44, but I honestly don't know). How many college kickers can consistently make 45+ yard field goals?

I'm a little woozy, so I apologize if this is only coherent to myself.

Freakin' keyboard kills me...

You want to look at this in another way based on what you just said...

Stop shaking your head. Just a thought.

Thank goodness today is 2/04 or you'd really be screwed.

Hm, speaking of 0/4, that was his record on kicks over 50 yards. He was 2 for 5 inside of 50 with kicks of 45 and 46. I know one of his misses was 44 against LSU...couldn't say off the top of my head what the others were.

I don't see the situation in as bad of a light as you it seems.

How scouts evaluate HS kickers is a mystery to me. I remember a few year back when we recruited this kid named McLaughin (I think) who I believe was also rated the #1 kicker in the country and he was only like 5/13 on FGs in high school. Granted he nailed a 57 yarder, but how can you be the #1 kicker at just 5/13? If you remember, the guy never attempted a single kick at Alabama. I guess my point is that I’m not convinced that Griffin will be the cure for all of our kicking woes just because a recruiting service says he is.

Also, the intangible some people are missing with Foster handling kick-offs is that he’s a pretty good tackler. I actually rewatched the All-Barn game today and do you realize McCaleb would have returned two consecutive KOs for TD if Foster hadn’t made the tackle on the second one?

It's not really an intangible, it's just overlooked. Cade has his lanes to cover as well...

I do believe I stated on about the first page that Foster was a good tackler and that everyone probably remembers that CNS had a few choice words for Leigh Tiffin after one of his feeble attempts at a tackle early in the 08 or 09 season.

With the exception of one return for a TD, do you know how many points were scored off of missed FG's attempts this season? Was it just a matter of momentarily flipping field position?

I bring that up, along with the earlier post about field position and Shelley's blocks, to bring up an overlooked point.

There are a lot of things they are factoring in when it comes to who kicks, and when. I'd love to get my hands on one of the sheets they grade kickers on during games. It would give us more room to accurately "judge."
