Kentucky could save more than $2 million by going to SEC-only football schedule
Kentucky could save over $2 million from the cancellation of nonconference football games, but negotiations remain ongoing.
LEXINGTON ā The Southeastern Conferenceās move to cancel nonconference football games this fall could save Kentucky more than $2 million.
Unless the Wildcatsā scheduled nonconference opponents push for financial compensation for the canceled games.
āThe university is in discussions with all nonconference opponents,ā a UK spokesman said in a statement provided to The Courier Journal. āWe will share final resolution of all those talks.ā
On Thursday, the SEC announced plans to play a 10-game 2020 schedule made of only conference games. UKās previously scheduled games against Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Eastern Illinois and Louisville were canceled as a result.
According to the contracts for those games obtained by The Courier Journal through an open records request, UK was set to pay $2.45 million in guarantees to Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Eastern Illinois for three home games. The Wildcats would have been paid $300,000 by Louisville for traveling to Cardinal Stadium for the annual Governorās Cup rivalry game.
