And, based on what I've seen over the years, if you don't know who it's going to be by now you've got issues with the QB situation.

On a positive note for Trojan fans this isn't the only glaring question at USC. So, there's no need for them to get focused on one position. After all...

Not that I wanna defend Kiffin or anything but we didnt technically have a starter until after the first game in 2011... and ended up winning the national championship.

That was also the season that earned AJ the monicker, "game manager." The staff never really turned the offense over to him like most staff's would do with a QB. Never-the-less, you do have a point—somewhat.

Then we add things in like no RB, no FB...that's a team struggling to find its identity.

There's one small point that differentiates the two teams/seasons as well. While our offenses' success isn't wholly contingent on the play of the QB...there's a lot about how USC runs their offense that is reliant on QB play.

Lane Kiffin has decided to play two quarterbacks in the season opener at Hawaii on Thursday night and has yet to determine whether Max Wittek or Cody Kessler will start the game.

USC hasn’t entered a season in recent memory without a clear-cut starting quarterback, but Kiffin explained on Saturday how and why the decision to play two quarterbacks was reached.

Kiffin started his media session by saying, ā€œAfter a lot of research, a lot of thought and communication from our entire offensive staff, really breaking down all of spring and all of fall, we’ve made a decision that we anticipate playing both guys in the opening game.ā€

He added, ā€œFor us we look at it as a great thing. We don’t feel like we have to limit our offense with either one of them in there.ā€

Without a clear-cut starter, one has to wonder if Kiffin is compromising the team’s ability to rally around one leader, but Kiffin hopes one of the quarterbacks separates himself during the early part of the season.

Kiffin said, ā€œIdeally, we’re going to get to that. Ideally, we’re not going to continue to do this all year. But at the same time, it can’t just be because we’ve had a way of doing things before. They’ve both done so well on so many plays and communicated so well in the huddle that it didn’t show himself that one guy was above the other guy. We do it all the time at other positions and said we’re not going to be stubborn because we’re supposed to or because that’s what we’ve done for a hundred years. We got to do with all of our decisions what is best for our time.ā€

The first four games for the Trojans are at Hawaii, Washington State, Boston College, and Utah State.

Kiffin said, ā€œNow, we get to see it in a game setting. We’re in college. We don’t get real preseason games. Our quarterbacks haven’t been live.

They haven’t played a whole lot for us obviously, so we’ll get a chance to potentially see that.ā€

On the official depth chart released by USC on Saturday night, the quarterback situation was listed as ā€œWittek OR Kessler .ā€

Several positions were listed likewise.

ā€œThat depth chart doesn’t mean anything,ā€ said Kiffin. ā€œIt’s only because Tim (sport information director) makes me do it. I put about five-seconds thought to it. We’re still competing every day out here with our guys, whichever ones are still left healthy, and so that doesn’t mean anything.ā€

As much attention as the quarterback situation has received, the coaching staff has a bigger concern.

When asked to identify the number of players that will travel to Hawaii, Kiffin said, ā€œI don’t know that yet. We’re running out of them. Unfortunately, we were supposed to be getting healthy, but there were 19 that did not practice at all today, so I don’t know.ā€

Hawaii with the upset?

The other day I saw the spread was around -22, -23 which makes it tempting to play UH.

Then I consider how often Kiffin has been caught in his little schtick and I don't know if one can trust him when he says he's got 19 kids injured right now.

I know, it's tempting to ask "what reason would he have to lie about that?" Which leads me to ask, what reason did he have for lying about his vote in the Coaches poll last year?
