🏈 just a few thoughts if I may

I was just sitting here thinking about how great it is to be a BAMA fan. just a few short seasons ago we were a laughing stock, after NCAA rules violations, numerous coaching debacles, countless 4th quarter collapses, it took a strong person to listen to the crap that was forced upon us.

at those times i was just hoping for a little respect to come our way, to at least be competetive from week to week, mentioned as a team to look out for. never in a million years or countless fifths of the finest bourbon, would i think BAMA would be in the position they are now this suddenly

folks, we may be seeing the beginnings of a dynasty, the likes that hasnt been seen since the golden days of OKLAHOMA and Bud Wilkerson.

with all of the young talent we already have and the commits that are running over each other just to get the chance to wear that beautiful CRIMSON jersey, the future looks so bright.

i do believe at the beginning of next season, we will see a pre-season ranked number 1, 3 Heisman hopefuls, (Ingram, Richardson and yes, G-Mac) and a defense that will be feared from Gainsville to Lexington, from Death Valley to the Hedges, and all points in between.

an Offense that can score when ever they damn well please, not in a flashy way, but in a way that will command respect from every A-hole beat writer that predicted back then that BAMA would never even sniff the chance to play for it ALL.

i know I may be jumping the gun, but dammit, it just feels so good to be able to say these things and actually believe it, no not believe it, but by god KNOW IT

Yes, it's a wonderful life right now. Drink in as much as you can and let the rest wash over you. I'll not think of a Wilkinson dynasty just yet, but I feel good that we'll be in the conference and national hunt for some time.

Let's always remember the lean times. It keeps me grounded and humble. We all (at least the old guys like me) grew up knowing what it was like to win, and acting like we've been here before.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, although I don't think Saban will be here long enough to put up the kind of numbers Wilkinson had. But, once can always hope he has an 11 year run like two of the greatest had.

Here's an interesting comparison of two of the greatest coaches in the history of the game.

From 1948 through 1958, Bud Wilkinson lost more than 1 game a season only once and his record was 107-8-2 during that 11 year span with 3 NC. His overall record for his 17 years as head coach was 145-29-4.

From 1971 through 1981, Bryant was 116-15-1 during that 11 year span with 3 NC. From 1961 through 1981, his record was 204-35-3 with 6 NC.

Simply amazing numbers by two amazing coaches.

Great post man. This is exactly how I feel. Before Saban came, I would have been thrilled had you told me we would be a consistent 8-9 win per season team. I am 33 and have seen Alabama football at it's best and worst and I was reduced to thinking about us as a mid tier team. It would have been better than the losers we were right?

Coach Saban changed all of that and win or lose the NC game this year, Alabama Football is elite again.

The Dubose years were about as bad as Alabama Football has ever been. I remember setting ALL kinds of records then. The WRONG records. My father has also commented that those dark, hard years were as bad as it had been in his 60 years.

Either way, I am glad those years are gone for now.

There is some truth to this in every Alabama person I have ever met. Yeah it's a poor rural state and it does have its share of looneys, but I can tell you there is not a classier, never-say-die, grittier when the going's tough, winning group of people I've ever met. Yeah, there's something to that winner-as-a-birthright thing for most of us who are originally from there or who are touched by it. I've always been a winner and I've known it since I was a kid. Mostly this was due to having great parents I am sure. But I think Bama football has a good deal to do with it too.

I'ts amazing that Bear Bryant managed not to just touch his players and assistants but also anyone in the last 40 years who has called Alabama home and pulled for the Crimson Tide. Even you people who live in other states (and maybe even casual Auburn fans -- don't worry I won't rat you out! I know how you pull for the Crimson Tide when we play Florida, Penn St and soon Texas) and had to pull for them in secret amongst your non-understanding family and neighbors. You knew there was just something about this Crimson Tide herd of elephants and wanted to somehow be a part of it even if only in a small way.

And now time for a confession.

From 1988 to 1991, I was an Auburn fan. Those four years, borne from my deep dislike of Bill Curry, were a time when I proudly wore the orange and blue. I had all the Auburn gear: I had a Bo Jackson jersey. I had a War Eagle on my bedroom wall. I was 13 when I became an Auburn fan, and 16 when things began to change.

I liked the way Coach Stallings did things. I understood at 16 that it was time for a decision in my life. See, my dad and mom weren't really football fans. Neither of them were originally from Alabama. In fact, Dad was a Kentucky man, blue through and through. UK Basketball was all that mattered. Still to this day, I pull for UK basketball all the time, unless they are playing Bama. You now know where my allegiances lie in football, and have since 1991. There is no sense of indecision when the Tide plays UK, Auburn, or anyone in Football; It's engrained in me to be an Alabama man.

Upon arriving on campus at UA, in 1994, any hint of the past (my allegiance to Auburn from a few years earlier), was quickly washed away. My past was something I held as a deep secret. It's something I'm embarrassed about, but it helps to come clean . My wife, whom I met in Tuscaloosa (along with about 100 other women to varying degrees), didn't even know about my past transgression as an Auburn fan until around 1999, when my mom was digging out old stuff from the attic while we were there one weekend. Man, I got horselaughed by everyone. Demeaning, to be sure.

So, it's been difficult through the years, watching us go from Title contender and winner in 1992-1994, to the resignation of Stallings in 1996, the awful, awful days of losing to La Tech, La Monroe, Va Tech ugly in the Music City in 98, 7 losses in a row to Tennessee, 6 in a row to Auburn, 5 in a row to LSU, Franchione improving in 2002, then abruptly leaving, hiring Price, firing Price, NCAA Sanctions twice, watching Shula learn on the job, then sitting out a 2007 season that could have been much more positive than it ended.

Now, we are national title favorites. Newly crowned SEC Champions again, for the 22nd time. Winners of 3 in a row over Tennessee, two in a row over LSU, and 2 in a row in dramatic fashion against that trash from Lee County.

It's great to be from Al-a-bama.
