šŸ€ Jones’ Double-Double Keys Alabama Men’s Basketball Comeback Win Over Furman, 83-80

Furman is a solid team. As good if not better than a lot of the SEC teams. They had an experienced basketball team and you could tell it throughout the game. One of their top scorers fouled out with 8:00 minutes which helped Bama big time. I was as frustrated as anyone watching but Bama played with much more energy in the 2nd half. Oats has enough depth this year so he was able to find a combination that worked especially on the defensive end. May have sent a message to some of the starters if you are going to be out on the court you need to bring energy on the defense or you are going to get pulled. Did not have that luxury last year.

I think the biggest issue going forward will be how best to divide up minutes on this roster and allow that group to get into a flow for the game. We have several new pieces that have never played together outside of practice, so it is hard to get into a good feel. Often times when you get a lot of new guys in, they press thinking that they have to make an immediate impact instead of allowing the game to come to them.

Guess I'm the glass half full guy here that is looking at a new team finding their way and learning how to play together after their preparation time was decreased significantly due to the virus. I'm happy they didn't freaking give up and quit, which has happened with our team at times. Down 15 points in the second half? Yeah, I thought it was over, but kept watching. Herbert Jones has transcended his game to a whole other level. Not many on this thread thought he would be the backbone of this team this year and the one to make that difference necessary in games like last night. I'll take a three point win over Furman any day of the week over a one point loss. We have time to get our act together before SEC play, and as I see it, this is just warm up opportunities. Ones we need very badly.

Like @UAgrad93 said, the biggest challenge is finding time for all of these guys to get on the court, but also allowing them to get into a rhythm. Takes time fellas. We have some good ball players. When shooting gets cold like against Clemson or most of last night, it's very hard to watch, but then the hustle plays from Jones always seem to show the talent gap we have against some other teams. Jacking up threes all game long whether we hit or miss could hurt us, but it's Oats way of playing, so we live and die by it. It'll all start clicking. We won't be moving backwards.

It appears all the talk about the transfer guard JQ was more hype than anything. Nate still trying to find the right people to play the game at Bama.

It's pretty wild that we have now played 4 Top 67 KenPom teams and 1/3 of the conference hasn't played a single Top 100 team.

#22 Clemson, #35 Stanford, #64 Providence, #67 Furman

Georgia, Ole Miss, Vandy, and Arkansas combined haven't played a single team in the Top 100

Wasn't expecting Rojas to be the guy that sorta saved the game, but his energy and play in the 2nd half was nice to see. He's limited athletically, but he played with an intensity that his teammates have trouble maintaining. I'm still dumbfounded as to why the shooting is so bad... thought getting back on home court it would improve. Some are bad shots, but many are not. I love what Herb brings to the table, (though his ball handling scares the shit out of me), but I really wish he'd take the ball to the rim with some authority. Feels like he misses 4-6 layup/bunnies a game.

Furman is a tournament team l... I would say a 6 seed or better in the tournament this year. They are a skilled team with a good idea where to get the basketball and how to get it there. This was a great comeback and great win against a very senior laden team. I was most impressed with the adjustments that the staff made and the play of our bigs. I thought they took over on the glass.
We switched to a match up zone, which slowed them down some and with them playing a 5 out offense we took over the rebounding. This is a game we would have lost in years past.

Rojas' energy almost scared me because I was just waiting on a technical or a shove to happen. You're right though, seeing him fight for a loose ball, his rebounding at the end, and then his three was big time stuff.

Yeah, this will definitely count as a quality win when the tournament selections are being made.

I am still stumped at how Oats is ok with any player bringing the ball down the court when they rebound but some of these guys can't handle the ball well. Rojas being one of them.

As far as Jones goes, obviously Oats sees something in him that makes him feel like he has the potential to handle the ball and make outside shots. If he pulls it off against better competition he will indeed be a matchup problem. From my observation he just does not look natural handling the ball or shooting. So far it is working for him but it does not seem natural. Wish all the best for the kid because he is a great blue collar guy and you want kids like him to succeed even more so.

One thing is for sure, we do not have a Kyra Lewis on the court this year. I do believe that Primo has that look. Very smooth looking player just needs more games under his belt at this level.

I'll add this too, next year, JD Davison will have zero issues taking the ball strong to the hoop.
So is this football recruit "Kool-aid" that we signed today supposed to try and play football and basketball? If so is he any good at basketball? Really no idea how he could do both especially with the demands of football at the Bama football level.

Superb athlete. I guess he's still going to try, I haven't heard or seen differently. His future is in his coverage skills though, and usually that stuff sort of works itself out pretty quickly.

For sure excellent athlete, fast, good hands and can jump out of the gym. Saw him many times in AAU tournaments. From what I could see, I can't see him being an impact player at the division 1 level. He is only 6,1 maybe 6'2 and doesnt have a consistent outside shot. He has the athletic ability to be a great defender and instincts to possibly be a 2nd or 3rd string point guard as I don't hink he would play over JD, Primo our Q
