In the thread @T&B has been updating on recruiting there's a wild comment from one of the Rivals evaluators.

Certainly, there's an argument to be made that slot receivers shouldn't be five-star candidates, but Earle is one of the few exceptions. The Alabama signee is a home-run threat from anywhere on the field with the ability to make plays in space and keep defenders off-balanced in small windows. Earle has continued to improve as a route-runner and with his hands and was routinely dynamic every time he touched the rock for Aledo these past three years. - Sam Spiegelman, South-Central recruiting analyst

I've followed recruiting for a long while now and that statement confuses the hell out of me. Can someone tell me what the argument is that slot guys can't be five stars?

JMO but the fact the kid flipped from LSU to Bama has more to do with where he is lined up on the field. Like #6 doing his in motion circle button patterns it is difficult to cover a guy with true skills if not impossible. Looks like Bama hit the lottery on receiver guys so the bigger question is do we have a QB that can deliver the call consistently. We'll see. Man I hope they get to have spring drills. I don't understand any reason why they couldn't having just completed a season. Then again neve doubt politicians stupidity.

I saw that statement in the other thread last night. Seemed completely asinine.

Maybe a slot receiver took his lunch money in 1st grade

Most likely one of those ā€œthrow a ridiculous statement out and see how many arguments I can startā€ that the new age ā€œjournalistā€ seem to employ

I'm just throwing this out there, not saying I agree. But is it possible that a true slot receiver is not considered a number one receiver, and thus the argument against 5 stars? I've never heard this before either but I'm just trying to come up with some sort of explanation. I guess it comes down to what a 5 star rating means in real terms as far as value to the team. I don't really know.

Another thing thought about is that I don't remember any 5 star centers. Has there been one? And of course there's no such thing as a 5 star kicker. Again I am just wondering out loud. I certainly wouldn't equate kickers and slot guys.

Clay Webb I believe was the first and only five star center. He's showing why they don't rank them high.
