Former Alabama offensive lineman John Hannah has a unique perspective when it comes to Crimson Tide history.

Hannah was a two-time All-American under coach Bear Bryant from 1970-72. The player went on to enjoy a successful NFL career with the New England Patriots during which he became a nine-time Pro Bowl player.

Recently, Hannah spoke to AL.com’s Mark Heim about a number of topics. During the question-and-answer session, Hannah was asked about Saban, and the former Crimson Tide standout addressed key differences between Bryant and Alabama’s current coach. The answer was fascinating.

Check out the exchange between Heim and Hannah below:

Q. You mentioned Bryant and Saban, so I’m curious. There was an SI cover after Alabama won its most recent championship with Saban on the cover. They photoshopped a houdstooth fedora on Saban’s head. Some Alabama fans took exception to that. What is your reaction?
A. I’ll tell you a story. I remember when Saban was first hired. Some guy called me. He asked me what I thought of Saban. Really, I didn’t know much. He said, “Well, he has a hard time with his coaches and coaches really fear him, and this and that and the other.” I said, “Well, that sounds like coach Bryant.” Then, he said, “He doesn’t get along with the newspaper guys and doesn’t do well with the media.” I said, “Well, that sounds like coach Bryant. He kept going and everything he said about Saban sounded like coach Bryant.”
They aren’t the same people. I think coach Saban is a little bit closer to all his players than coach Bryant was. Coach Bryant was maybe closer to one or two guys on the team. That’s it. The rest of them were scared to death of him.
I think Saban reaches out a lot more in recruiting. He’s an unbelievable recruiter. He has gotten so much talent down there. They are different personalities and some other subtleties, but they are both great coaches who have accomplished a whole lot at the University.

It’s always fun to hear insight from former Alabama stars under Bryant about how they view Saban. With Saban winning his fifth national title with Alabama and his sixth overall in January, it’s becoming easier to argue that Saban is college football’s greatest coach regardless of era. The Crimson Tide and their fans are living through a remarkable time.

Still, some in Alabama consider Bryant to be the top Crimson Tide coach after he won six national titles and made Alabama a national juggernaut. Let the debate continue.

to me, comparing Coach Bryant and Coach Saban is a lot like comparing the armies of this country during the revolutionary war and world war 2.

both armies did great things for this country. both fought an opposing army that seemed to be on overwhelming power, but came through as winners both times. but...you really can't compare them to each other; as they were in different times with different men and different leaders.

but...we are grateful to each for doing what needed to be done to come out as winners.

and i revel in the fact that i was alive to see both. if only to see Coach Bryant for a few short years.

so you younger people who weren't around for Coach Bryant, enjoy this ride. and know that THIS is the feeling your mamas and daddies were talking about when they talk about the "good ole days".

It was a great ride living in Birmingham in the 60s...going to many of the games..during BEARs great run....and now getting to enjoy this episode of Bama football driven by Nick.....having season tickets and going to the games and enjoying the excitement of Bama football...its special time...it rarely comes around twice....
Yes...enjoy ..... these are the good ole days again....

John is a pretty cool dude in person. Have done some IT work for him in the past and he was always super nice to me and my helpers.
I met David Hannah (the youngest of the 3) at the Full Moon in Inverness last fall and he as well is a great guy. He had a knee injury while at Bama and he has a hitch in his Giddy up today.

“I honestly believe that if you are willing to out-condition the opponent, have confidence in your ability, be more aggressive than your opponent and have a genuine desire for team victory, you will become the national champions. If you have all the above, you will acquire confidence and poise, and you will have those intangibles that win the close ones.”......Coach Bryant

No disrespect to Coach Paul Bear Bryant, in my opinion Nick Saban has surpassed him as the greatest coach in Alabama football history.

What he's done in 11 years is UNBELIEVABLE...

Well...I ain't there just yet.....one piece missing remember..BEAR had to do it without a large part of the population....black players....they headede out to the north or schools like Grambling....so..yeah....he had some recruiting advantage..but had some limitations also..
Plus....the BEAR is legendary..like Babe Ruth....Mickey Mantle
Nick is the greatest and #1 like Hank Aaron....Bonds
Thats the way i see it...

I think guys just throw that stuff out there to get a rise these days. The other possibility is that human folks are such prisoners of the moment they still haven't figured out WHY coach Bryant had hit "legendary" status long ago. It's about more than incredible football numbers, maybe they should read a book. If you get into a serious discussion on the subject seldom is the comparisons about wins, conference championships, overcoming social disadvantages, and the absolute incredible advantage of having the BCS and playoff to get to that NCG.

The only thing coach Saban has had to worry about when he goes recruiting is can he talk the recruit into coming. Coach Bryant was told no, you can't recruit the best athletes in your state and in the country for most of his career. Yet you constantly hear some Bama fans discussing how coach Bryant got all the recruits he wanted because of the no scholarship limit. Not hardly.

Sure they were. And so were a lot of other team's roster. The elite player today can easily be lead to the hottest coach running the hottest program. Players today talk about "business decisions" as the impetus for where they are How many of our recruits just say they grew up Alabama fans and playing for Alabama mean's everything? How many coaches in Tuscaloosa would be listening if they did? Gone with the Wind.

People keep trying to compare them, but you really can't. Different times, different players, different opponents, different scheduling challenges, different rules, different bowl systems, different offenses/defenses. It's like comparing the U.S. Military from WWII to today; which is better? Has today's military won a world war? Did the military from WWII monitor cyber channels and develop social media campaigns to sway the population of another country?

I'm satisfied saying that Alabama has been able to have the two greatest coaches in college football. Rank isn't important.

How old a player are you? I enrolled in 1961, but not a player.
