Jarran Reed has some advice, maybe even a cry for help, as he’s almost out the door on his Alabama career and headed into the NFL.
The Crimson Tide defensive tackle believes a certain standard has been set by the front seven, a unit that wreaked havoc on opposing offenses in 2015 and was considered the best defensive front in college football.
“Working extra hard,” Reed advised the returning Alabama players Tuesday after his first practice at the Senior Bowl. “The team needs you, you’re going to have to be out there when the team calls you.”
Ring, ring.
With Reed and A’Shawn Robinson leaving for the pro game — both could potentially be first-round draft picks in April — the mammoth interior lineman said the Crimson Tide are still in good hands. Dalvin Tomlinson, Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne were names that instantly came to Reed’s mind when asked who could replace all the talent that left Tuscaloosa, Ala. since the national championship.
There are many more too, according to Reed, ready to step up and continue the tradition of a defensive front that not only excels on the field, but is deep enough to rarely tire.
Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson are two guys Reed feels will make the most out of their transition from situational players to rocks that can solidify Alabama’s defense on every down.
“I think the coaches will take them in the offseason and help them improve in the run game,” said Reed about Williams and Anderson and their transition to every-down players. “Once they do that, it’s all she wrote. It’s going to be trouble with those guys on the field every play.”
And what about the entire defensive front? What does Reed expect to see on Saturday’s when he turns on his TV next fall?
“I really don’t think they’re going to lose a beat,” said Reed. “I think they’re going to be a great defense. I think they’re going to uphold the standards of what we held them to.”
Another season with that style of defense? That should strike fear in the rest of the SEC.
