TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Trains run regularly near the Alabama football team's practice fields.
Jalston Fowler runs regularly on the Alabama practice fields.
Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.
Fowler, whose nickname is "Nudie" (see the story behind that), is a running back who has been practicing mostly at H-back during preseason camp. He runs. He blocks. He catches.
What does he like best?
āRunning,ā Fowler said after the Crimson Tide's practice Tuesday morning.
Why?
āI like to truck people, run people over," Fowler said. "Weāve got this saying: When you hear the train coming across the railroad, hear the little choo! choo! Nah thatās the Nudie Bus.ā
The 6-foot-1, 250-pound product of Vigor High School near Mobile was asked where that came from.
āCoach (Scott) Cochran," Fowler said, referring to Alabama's loud and energetic strength-and-conditioning coach. "'Wah! Wah! Brother, that aināt no train. Thatās the Nudie Bus.'ā
[It's better if you watch the video.]
Fowler says he likes to catch the ball out in space where he can build up a head of steam.
"Thatās going to spell trouble for the defenders back there," he said. "They better watch out for me.ā
Perhaps the NCAA will have to come up with a new targeting rule for offense. Right?
āMaybe,ā Fowler said with a grin.
Fowler said he least likes to be hit in practice by linebackers Adrian Hubbard and Trey DePriest.
āTrey just has a heavy body," Fowler said. "Hubs is crazy. Heās got a motor.ā
So what happens when he hits one of them?
āItās, āOh, man, these two again?ā" Fowler said. "But itās nothing personal. Just guys going at it, making each other better.ā
HaHa Clinton-Dix chuckled when asked which teammates he hates tackling.
"I'm going to have to go with Jalston," the junior safety said. "He's a big back. Powerful. Keeps his legs moving. Between him and T.J. (Yeldon), those are two great backs. And also (Derrick) Henry. He's a load."
Clinton-Dix was asked if Fowler creates mismatch problems for a defense because of his multiple positions.
"It definitely is," Clinton-Dix said. "He can go to running back, tight end, split out. He does a lot for us. I'm glad to have him on my team."
Do they really call Fowler the "Nudie Bus"?
"That's what they call him," Clinton-Dix said with a laugh. "He's a bus. He's a bus. He's a tough load to handle."
