My problem with our offense this year is that we haven't established a real passing attack yet. Our offense is like 2014 except we're better at RPOs, but without the deep ball. Shootout games still worry me, because we needed a plethora of non-offensive TDs to beat Ole Miss. We're gonna need Jalen to really improve in downfield passing.
I think we're gonna have a lot of close games this season tbh. Everyone thinks we're just gonna roll through because Jalen's a badass, but we've only played one SEC team so far, and we barely escaped. Our offense scored 10 points in the first half of that game despite a LOT of possessions. Yeah we looked great against a nobody in Kent State, but I think we'll see our offensive woes strike up again vs. lowly Kentucky.

I've always seen this as closer to the Wing-T or Wing-back approach.

But, what the hell does it matter. I'd give a weeks salary just to have people keep straight the differences between a Jet Sweep, Fly Sweep, end around, or reverse. When Bama was playing Ole Miss I had to laugh a bit at Danielson while he kept trying to define the differences in a hurry up attack while calling the wrong plays on the above.

True.

The only real difference is the pistol set, and the "wing back" is aligned 5-7 yards from the tackle, in what is now known as the Z or slot position.

At the snap, the Z/Slot/Wing is in the backfield after motioning anyway, so it resembles the single-wing at that point.

Single-wing, wishbone, flexbone, or pistol 3-wide... it's all nearly identical in the triple-option concept and theory. Just different window dressings.

Dude, you morph into more phobias that an episode of Monk. 46.5 points a game, 100% efficiency in the red zone. Our TF QB has been named SEC player of the week in his first SEC game. We put 52 points on USC, Stanford didn't, neither did Utah. Brought us back from 21 points down against the rebels in Oxford. Do you remember what Dak Prescott looked like as a sophomore to a senior at MSU to a starter for the Cowboys? Like cheese just takes time, enjoy the Bama wins, if that's really possible.

I do enjoy the wins, but like most Bama fans, I'm looking at where we fit in on the national level, and so far, I think there are several teams out there that would beat us pretty soundly right now. I'm talking about THIS YEAR. Yeah, I know Jalen's a freshman, and he has potential, and all that, but until the light really comes on for him, there's a legit concern with his inability to deliver the ball on time, and accurately.

We are going to sink or swim with the strengths and weaknesses of the sum of who we are. Nationally speaking what Frankensteins are we dealing with who would soundly beat this defense?

I have to admit that my confidence had much to do with a returning starter at QB, and in 2012 one of the best OLs we have ever had. Comparisons would be kind of apples to oranges. A J ran only when endangered, we huddled, different OCs led to different styles. Nuss emphasized power running, and while we do that some this year, I don't think we have settled our offensive identity yet. We can do a lot of different things but it is not clear yet what our offense will do when it comes down to it

We were down 24-3 on the road to a team that beat us the last 2 years. I think it's pretty clear our offense is as capable as ever, depending on the play calling, with a QB who was in the high school huddle last year. Y'all wanna talk about what he can't do yet not point out that he can do more positive things than anyone we've ever seen with Saban. Does it without ever looking rattled or breaking a sweat. Enjoy this kid... He's special.

He seemed very proud of his new "N.H.S.H.U" (or whatever he called it) reference... which is just stupid. The idea of the N.H.H.U is that you Hurry up to the LINE OF SCRIMMAGE so 1) the Defense can't substitute easily and 2) you can see the defensive formation and have time to change your play call if you want to... which Ole Miss did a lot of, but what they were not really doing is playing with TEMPO... IE, snapping the ball quickly. So more correctly, Gary should have call it a "N.H.H.U.S(ometimes).T(empo)"... but both Gary and Vern are idiots so who really cares...

Not many folks are going with 'tempo' this year. Even the barn has slowed it down a lot, though that has more to do with not putting their defense back on the field so quickly than anything else. We could probably go fast more successfully than most of the proponents of the hurry up this season. What has changed?

IMO it is two things; first of all, many of the proponents of the hurry up no longer have the dynamic quarterback to gain maximum advantage of the hurry up, or in the case of Ole Miss, their defensive depth is not what it was a year ago, so they aren't keen on a one minute possession that puts the D right back on the field.

Gary did make one valid point in his meanderings about the HUNH offense. You hurry up to make the defense make a mistake, but you make more mistakes as well. It was one thing to have a Cam Newton whose size and athleticism could overcome a bad play, not so much with the current crop of QBs at the barn.

That is not really an issue with HUNH... it has to do with Tempo. The two are not the same thing. HUNH is designed to help get you into the correct play call as you Hurry Up to the LOS and look to the sideline to see if any play changes are needed by the way the Defense lines up. It gives you more time to look at the defensive alignment and make adjustments. The Tempo is where you get in trouble as you start to snap the ball as quickly as you line up. Technically, you can and often do use the entire 40 second clock in a HUNH scheme.

Semantics. The defense gets to see your set and change its call as well.

Let's just say that not many teams are rushing up to the line of scrimmage to snap the ball quickly this season, for whatever the reason. aTm literally wore out our defense in 2011 and 2012 because they snapped the ball in a hurry. The barn gave us problems in the past because they snapped the ball in a hurry. This led not only to fatigue, but players not lining up correctly on defense, being unsure of the defensive call, etc. OM did very little of this in our game. The Barn does not do it at all, at least at no time when I have been watching them. UT certainly has the capability to go fast, but they aren't. The Aggies, now that they seem to have a solid defense, are not as concerned about running 90 plays a game as they once were.

I'm watching defenses slowly figure it out and do a better job of substitution patterns, keeping the troop's fresher and the refs have caught up to the speed. So the offense doesn't have the huge advantage it did just a few seasons ago. The gap is still there, but defensive staffs like Bama are working hard to close the distance and at the same time take advantage of the HUNH themselves.

Teams don't run a lot of Tempo because Defenses are more multiple with the same guys on the field. 3 years ago we had a different defensive grouping for each situation...now we use the same groups for just about all situations and just rotate players into that group as we can to keep them fresh. Teams have figured out how to mold their defense to fit the situation they were being put in.

I don't know guys. I sort of agree. In fact. one of "those teams" is nearby. In Atlanta. But we don't play the Falcons.
