The hit that rocked the entirety of last bowl season -- Jadeveon Clowney's shot against Michigan's Vincent Smith -- would've drawn an ejection under new rules this season, according to the ACC officiating supervisor.

In addition to that comment, former NFL official Mike Pereira confirmed that same notion to SB Nation's Steven Godfrey.
In case you missed the rule changes for the upcoming college football season, officials will, at their discretion, be able to eject a player for any intentional, above-the-shoulder hit.

Watch the hit again and decide for yourself. Would this play merit an ejection under the new rule?

These rules are getting out of hand. Clowney was clearly aiming dead center of that guys chest and like he said hes freakin 6'6", what do they want him (or athletes his size) to do? I thought Spurrier said on ESPN that SEC Head of Officials said that hit would have been clean regardless of the rule tho.

What the hell is wrong with that play? Are you telling me a guy that is larger than the opposing offensive player could be penalized for making a clean tackle because he leads with the crown of his helmet? This is absolute b.s. How in the hell are defenders even going to play the game anymore if they can no longer dislodge the ball? And it only gets worse as time goes on because running backs and receivers are now intentionally going into fetal position to cause helmet-to-helmet contact.

He did, and Steve Shaw said it wouldn't have warranted an ejection.

I'm unable to find any reason not to believe the first couple of weeks of this season is going to be highlighted with calls that shouldn't have been made.

Plus, that play happened so fast, what was he supposed to do anyway?

With these types of rules its gonna do nothing but hurt players from just reacting (like Clowney did on that play) to possibly overthinking and ending up just flat out missing tackles.

I guess that's why it's so good to have real depth on the team. Bama players are still going to be coached to play correctly and yet full out. If one becomes subject to an ejection due to the new (and stupid) consequence, there will definitely be someone else just as good to fill in.
