Texas coach Mack Brown said Monday that not only is he in favor of the 10-team Big 12 Conference playing a full round-robin schedule (as does the Pac-10), but that the Longhorns have begun reaching out to other marquee teams to find at least one difficult non-conference game every season. That's even more impressive given that Texas will be playing only three non-leagues per year, not four.

I give Texas props for getting a quality non-con. I think it makes it better for Texas and all football fans. But throwing out "3 non con vs 4" cudos is rediculous. Of the remaining 10 Big 12 teams that will be back next year, only 5 had a winning record. Of those:

Iowa State had a 3-5 conf record (7-6 overall) and 3 wins vs N Dakota St, Kent Stage and Army.

The SEC, in comparison had 10 teams with a winning record. If you want to argue the (3 vs 4 non con) and if you arbitrarily remove one win from everyone, then 7 SEC teams still had winning records.

Geese!

It isn't like that 9th conference game is adding value to their schedule. Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri (what's left of the old Big Twelve North) are hardly perennial powers. I'd class them as occasionally respectable. If they played in the SEC they would be hard pressed to break even in conference games.

Bravo. That is both too good of a point and too easy to see for it not to be brought to light when it counts.
