Any one heard any info on Ivan Matchett, and how he has progressed. And is there a spot in the stable for him next year?

This past season we didn't have a fullback role if you go strictly by the definition.

I mention that because it'll give you and idea of what kind of player I'm told Matchett is going to be...as in, what role he's likely to fill...sort of a FB type role.

It's going to be fun to see how the roles break down when spring camp comes and then even more so in the fall with Richardson gets on campus.

As to how he's progressed, he's definitely been a guy they've (players) talked about on the scout team.

Probably. He isnt a big guy...his running style and physical size is similar to Maurice Jones-Drew.

I would be surprised and GREATLY disappointed if we used Matchett as a pure fullback (which we don't really use anyway) The kid has INCREDIBLE instincts, he's extremely physical, tough to take down and has a pretty good burst of speed (not the best overall speed though). He follows blocks extremely well and is an absolute terror when running the screen. He can get the tough yards and on top of all that, he can protect the qb! Everything I have heard has been that he has been impressive on the scout team. He was my favorite recruit from last year's class, with Hightower being a very close 2nd.

When we are in a two back set, and it isn't the normal split back set you see often in Pro-sets, what do you call the "other role?"

It's not an H-back, although at times that player will take a stance in that type of position, it's not a fullback although they will be the leading blocker at times.

I don't know exactly what the staff calls the position.

The best analogy was mentioned earlier when someone asked if we would use him somewhat like we used Upchurch when we were in a non-traditional two back set. The answer to that is yes.

It's "sort of" a full back type role...but then again, not the traditional definition of a full back.
