I think because he has paid his penance to the NCAA. I think there was a show-cause and that wasn't over with. While he would not have been "coaching" per-se, I think the SEC didn't want that kind of scrutiny with one of their member institutions dealing with the NCAA so close to his firing.

Nobody really wins at Ole Miss, but as much as it kills me to admit it, Freeze is a hell of a (offensive) coach. He's going to eventually end up back in the SEC IMO, but my money is on Tennessee instead of auburn. But, in time, both will try and get him. And he'd be a fantastic hire, baggage aside. Saban is very high on him (from a football aspect of course).

Yeah, if someone wants him now, they'll get him. Sankey and the SEC don't have many teeth left in their bite on cases like this when you look at the auburn/Pearl situation and the LSU stuff with Wade (and even Orgeron to a degree, who was known to be dirty as hell long before he got back to LSU).
