Ok, first off, let's take a look at their schedule...
Now, the current SEC West standings...
We know that Alabama and Texas A&M are not ending up in the cellar. That leaves Arky, auburn, Ole Miss, MSU, and LSU.
-Arkansas drew the short end of the schedule stick, but they already have 2 wins and are playing better than anyone expected. They still have winnable games left, in particular, Tennessee, Missouri, and yes, LSU.
-Ole Miss only has 1 current win, but has the offense to win any given weekend. They also play Vandy which should be a gimmie (and I figure Lane will try and destroy MSU in the Egg Bowl).
-auburn has no business being in this discussion, but here they are (thanks, Gus!). They sit at 2-2 in the league and their next 4 games could be a bit of a crapshoot: @ Ole Miss, LSU, @ MSU, and Tennessee. auburn should win at least 2 of those which would put them in good shape (for the sake of this conversation, make no mistake, they're screwed overall).
-MSU, IMO, is a big contender here. As of now, they are already sharing last place with Ole Miss (both with 1-3 records). Good news for State is that Vandy lurks on the schedule. Bad news is, unless they get things figured out on offense soon, there's not much else there. But weird things happen in the SEC in November, and weird things happen with Leach. It would be just like him to lose to Vandy but beat auburn and Missouri somehow.
-LSU, like auburn, has no excuse even being mentioned in a thread like this. Yes, they lost a ton on and off the field from last season, but they still have a lot of talent. If they don't beat South Carolina this Saturday, the possibility of a last place finish will become much more realistic, IMO. I should probably stop and mention here that according to reports, their QB Myles Brennan is out indefinitely with a torn abdomen (also, Bo Pelini is still their defensive coordinator). LSU's lone win is against helpless Vandy. The once thought "easy game" against Arkansas is no longer that, and it is @ Arky. Their possible SEC West bottom dwelling status could come down to the auburn (away) and Ole Miss (home) games. Also, and this is very important, MSU beat them already, so they own that head-to-head tiebreaker if say both finish with 3 wins.
Regardless how it plays out, it is going to be fun to watch unfold IMO. The fact that I can even bring this question up about a team that was (justifiably, IMO) labeled the best team ever in 2019 is fascinating (Orgeron's history notwithstanding). How do you guys see it playing out? Can LSU get good enough play from their backup QB to keep the pressure off Pelini and their defense and win a few? If LSU does manage to find a few wins, which team do you think ends up at the bottom of the league standings after week 10?
