🏈 Is Boise State a lock for the BCS Title Game?

Is Boise State already a lock for the National Championship Game?

Watercooler topic of the day was Boise's win over Virginia Tech. Curiously, folks were either emphatic that Boise was assured a shot in the BCS National Championship Game, or that they had played themselves out already by way of the close finish.

I am a played themselves out guy, with the caveat that this was because they now needed perfections and too many folks playing themselves out of BSU's way.

What are your thought, and why?

If any two of the chamions from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10, ACC go undefeated then Boise is locked out regardless of what they do. They have no margin for error. A loss for Boise eliminates them from the NCG no matter how much love ESPN shows them. It gets dicey if Boise is undefeated and say you have a one loss Oklahoma and a one loss Ohio State for example.

And even Herbie, who usually doesn't give the SEC a ton of love, said that a one loss SEC team or one loss Big Ten team would still likely get into the BCS title game over an undefeated Boise, largely depending on how that team finishes. In other words, if you're gonna lose, if you're Bama, Florida, Texas, Ohio State, others, then lose early and finish strong.

I don't think Boise is a lock to get in. hard to go perfect two straight seasons. Even though we have won 25 straight regular season games (remarkable, IMHO), we have a narrow loss in the 08 SEC title game and a nasty loss to Utah right after that, to keep us humble. Boise came awful close last night to losing. SOMEONE left on their schedule is gonna put a scare into them. If not beat them.

No, they need losses from some other schools in order to make the NCG. No way they jump an undefeated SEC, Big VII, Big Ten or Pac 10 program.

Boise played well last night even though they seemed to tire in the 3rd quarter. I don't think they could handle an SEC schedule unscathed though.

They are currently number three. If the two teams in front of them run the table then this is a moot point as they obviously wouldn't jump an undefeated Bama/OSU.

IF one of those teams lose I still wouldn't say they're a lock. Style points are going to be very, very important for Boise this year. If they even remotely look as if they're struggling against one of the push overs on their schedule you can stick a fork in them. If Bama and/or OSU lose and Boise dominates everyone on their schedule--yes they'll get their chance but they have 0 margin for error.

What I suspect the NCAA is dreading is the potential that this season has for setting precedents should Boise go undefeated.

If Ohio State runs the table looking reasonably good, they have to get one of the BCS NCG slots.

For sake of arguement, lets say Bama drops a close on at home to Florida, but then finishes unbeaten the rest of the year. At the end of the season you have OSU at #1, BSU at #2, and Bama at #3. So #3 Bama faces a highly ranked and respected Florida. WHAT DOES THE NCAA WANT TO SAY ABOUT THIS CALIBER OF GAME?

If Bama has not shot at jumping BSU, then they say the game is on no importance or influence beyond the conference. That statement must also be applied to all other CCGs. If the pre-game sentiment is that If Bama Wins They're In, then competition is encourage for every conference.

Further, rewarding weak schedules is a slippery slop. If you reward an undefeated Boise, what about an undefeated Sunbelt Conference team or a MEAC team, because it will not take long before they stop scheduling certain-loss games so that they can have an easy shot at the title.

Boise took one small step toward competing with the same standards as we do, but that step is not enough, as proven by discussions like this one.

Ole Miss has Boise State next year...Nutt gets to play his old team, can you imagine the fans take on that game, probably easier to take a loss to Boise State versus Jacksonville State, considering Boise State has shown they can compete in games, depth of the season is the big question mark...which I'm not sure will ever get answered.

IMHO, the whole thing is a travesty. BSU is a media-driven potential champion for all of the tree-huggers out there who got beat up on as a kid. Now they see their shot to show up the established, status quo, in Boise State.

The problem is, in my mind, .... how in the world can any reasonable person award a national championship (or birth in that game much less) to a team that plays ABSOLUTELY NO ONE year in, year out, and plays in a pathetic conference. I mean, outside of their openers (which they have all off-season to prepare for) they're playing Nevada and Wyoming. Seriously? No offense to Wyoming, but......:frown:

The whole thing is a joke. It's a disgrace to college football.

EXACTLY what he said.

I hope the following happens:->1. 'Bama goes undefeated & plays in the NC.->2. BSU is the only remaining undefeated team & plays 'Bama in the NC.->3. 'Bama stomps a mudhole in them because A.) see Porkchop's note above, B.) 'Bama needs redemption from the 2009 Sugar Bowl, & C.) Pat Forde would shut up.

This is a great post.

I've been in countless arguments today about this non-sense. Its amazing how many people want to see this. I really don't think they know what theyre asking for.

If Boise gets in with their schedule here is what I propose: use 2 strong teams Bama/Florida or Ohio St/Mich or Texas/Oklahoma

these 2 teams agree to leave their conference and go independent while keeping a yearly game between the 2 and play the non-bcs conference schools for their other 11 games.

This guarantee's a championship game appearance in the next 2yrs, if Boise proves the model right.

Bama beats florida as its one tough game, and wins the other 11 easily = championship game.

There's no way they're a lock RIGHT NOW. VTech might end up 8-4 which devalues this win big time. Oregon St might end up as a mediocre team also. After that they really have no one. I guess Fresno St could end up in the top 25.

Boise won't get in over an undefeated/1 loss SEC, Big10, Big12, ACC, or PAC10 team imo. They might get in over a undefeated BigEast team. They need a 2007 scenario to play out.

Couldnt agree more. What would the media say about Bama if we opened against Penn State and squeaked out a win....then played a remaing schedule of a bunch of San Jose States and beat the chit out of em every game ? The media would not give Bama or any other team the time of day and would LAUGH at the notion of being considered for the BCS title game. So many feel that Boise is "ENTITLED" to be in the championship game.....In my opinion...they havnt EARNED the right to go...with the cupcake opponents they play.....whole thing is a media joke. They simply dont deserve it....Frankly..its obsurd to me that they are ranked #3.
