🏈 Iron Bowl moved to Friday in 2009-'10

Insane?

Hell, that's a prime time offering. Fantastic TV air time!!

Here's the press release:

CBS Sports to Televise 2009-2010 Iron Bowl Games; Next 2 Alabama-Auburn Games Will Be Played on Friday
TUSCALOOSA -- CBS Sports has announced that it will televise the 2009 and 2010 Alabama-Auburn football games nationwide. Games in both years will be moving to Friday on the last weekend of the Southeastern Conference's regular season schedule.
The 2009 game will be played on Friday, November 27, at 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CT) at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn. The 2010 game will be played on Friday, Nov. 26, (Time TBA) at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
CBS Sports is the exclusive national network broadcaster of Southeastern Conference football.

For european citizens like me, this is great news, but not a big deal (in terms of pageantry) that they have moved the game for a friday night. However, friday at 8:30 CET is perfect for me, Rene and someone else overseas... I guess not so good for you all...

RTR,

1:30 in the afternoon on Black Friday?? SURELY that will garner better ratings than Thanksgiving Day at 1:30pm....SURELY it Will!! :lance:

I'm not sure if I get what you are trying to say here, but if I'm reading it correctly you fail to understand how the ratings on that weekend run.

NCAA football doesn't try to go head to head with the NFL on Thanksgiving. Why? They'd end up with poor rankings. When they have attempted that it's always been a "second tier game:" like an Ole Miss vs Miss. St. type of event.

However, that night tends to do very well.

The day after Thanksgiving has done very well for college football and it has for years. While by the purest of definitions of "prime time" it doesn't fit - as in an 8PM CST slot - afternoon broadcasts do very, very well.

It's a great opportunity for Alabama. It will be the ratings winner that afternoon. The game that comes in second is likely to be Nebraska vs Colorado, but the share difference is going to be huge. HUGE.

I doubt it'll grab a double digit share number, but I'd bet it'll grab a 7 or 8. To put that in perspective, CSI drew a 6 share last year for the Thursday night (Thanksgiving.)

Before you start scratching your heads wondering where I come up with numbers like this...I do work in this industry.

Bottom line, it might interfere with some people's work schedule...but great move by CBS.

Absolutely terrible news to me. Anyone ever been to Arky/LSU?

The excitement level just isnt there for these games. And while it will be raised because it is the Iron Bowl it just wont seem normal. You can tailgate on Fridays if you want to but you will not find many that do it and say that it was similar to a Saturday. The game itself wont change, but it is the things around a game that make college football cool.

Driving to a game listening to Mike and Mike and not hearing the talking heads give me football scores is just a little weird.

This is an excellent move. Besides the obviousadvantages it offers yet another excuse to not go Christmas shopping with my wife.

I would expect a bigger viewing audience for us in this time slot than say playing it on Saturday night at 6:00 pm on ESPN.

The only REAL big problem I can see is, that friday is the biggest shopping day of the year. Now there'll be people trying to rush to get through with shopping to make it home to see the game. And trying to rush through shopping on that day is nearly impossible. I mean if I was a big shopper, I would be pissed because every Bama game day, I'm up early starting the grill and enjoying the day. Now some people will have to decide and that's gonna cause a headache for some people. lol. It wouldn't be so bad if it was a late noon or a night game. I can see alot of people not being too happy about it. But I'm not one of those people. I'm watchin the game.

There is an article I saw come in on the Bama News forum talking about the Iron Bowl having an impact on the shopping on Black Friday.

Didn't read it...but I did see the notice it was posted...

naw..this just sucks. if it was a fri. night game....lots of boozed up fans in BDS...rowdy as hell.....yeah.
But in the middle of the afternoon? comon.
the choice for me is simple.....Watch the game/ got to the game & loose a days pay (which on my salery i cannot afford to do!) or work and make the bills that week & miss the game. and i have yet to mis 1 Iron Bowl in 37 years. I have ran red lights to get to a tv some where ANY WHERE. including a Beauty Parlor. :wife:

Sigh. I dunno about this one. Guess we'll see come November.

I guess where I'm really lost on some thoughts here is in this area.

It's early April, over seven months away from kickoff. What's to keep you from putting in for a vacation day that Friday if you are one of the ones that are scheduled to work that day.

I'm also curious if you are scheduled to work that Friday does that also include being scheduled to work that Saturday?
