We knew it was only a matter of time before a player was ejected as a result of college football’s new rule on targeting a defenseless player, and it happened on the season’s first night. Indiana State’s Carlos Aviles was booted for his hit on Shane Wynn during a punt return in the third quarter. Aviles wasn’t the first victim of the new rule, actually, as Tulane and Missouri State had players ejected moments earlier.

With Aviles’ penalty happening in the second half, he must also sit out the first half of next week’s game at Purdue. Another result of the rule: Aviles had to be escorted off the field.

I think that was appropriate for him to be ejected. Hitting a defenseless player while they're looking up for a punt is ridiculous.

I love the reactions. The Indiana player next to the guy who got the hit puts up his hands instantly like "WTF?", and the crowd's immediate BOOOO when the hit occurs to the cheers when he's ejected. And then the guys in the crowd hollering insults at the DB .. Gotta love it.

Nasty hit though. Hope the PR is okay.

I'd call this one questionable. Interference on the catch? No doubt.

Targeting? I don't see him leading with the crown of his helmet...looks like shoulders to shoulders, contact right at the numbers with his forearms...early, but a foul worth being ejected?

Targeting doesn't require the crown of the helmet and I disagree with the announcer that this had anything to do with that part of the rule. This was due to the head or neck are of a defenseless player part of the rule, which does apply to this hit.

Looks to me the original contact point is the same place where the team wears the SEC logo on the jersey—shoulder, just below the collar bone.

It's close, but as I see this it isn't something you boot a kid for...watch his arms after contact...he's leading with forearms just above the numbers.

Bad call from a zealous ref trying to gain exposure. This hit, while explosive, is clean. Don't like it? Then perhaps tennis is more to speed. When the call is questionable, it should favor the player. I hate it that weaklings and wimps are slowly turning the best sport on earth into something else.

The hit would probably have been clean had the player caught the ball, but it wasn't even close.

Oops, looks like it was just 2: the Indy State player and then Tulane's Lorenzo Doss for a hit on Jackson State's QB.

Couldn't find a video of the actual hit, just videos of a post game interview with him.

I saw the video of the Tulane hit last night on ESPN, if I'm not mistaken he hit the QB as he was trying to slide. Looked pretty questionable to me, will try to find it.
