TUSCALOOSA -- Held back from contact all spring under the watchful eye of the Alabama training staff, Roy Upchurch is appreciative.
The senior running back has rehabilitated from surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his neck, spending the past 14 practices working on the mental side and imagining himself bursting through the line of scrimmage once again.
But seriously - seriously - he's ready to go.

Proclaims He Is Ready

Upchurch will be held out of the Spring game, obviously due to him not taking contact in practices, but things appear to be on the upswing for Roy.

If Roy can come 100% healthy and the mental aspect does not hamper him, watch out! This guy has a point to prove and this is his last chance. I have seen all to well what happens when a athlete is in his last year of contract and just explodes. This is due to taking it more seriously if you ask me. May not be the case with Roy, his is due to injury, but non the less he is in the same boat. Last year, show us what you got.

I hope this is only the beginning of the good news for Upchurch. He really gave us a spark in the Tennessee and Arkansas games and others. Seems like when Coffee and Ingram were "off" Upchurch was "on".

I was just watching parts of the Alabama/Auburn game the other day. I'm sure the intent was to play him sparingly because of his neck plus Coffee was having a heck of a day. Upchurch finally got in and ran off a great one, but as soon as he went down you could watch him grab his neck. You could tell right then and there that was it. He was obviously very frustrated. I hope he can get back right where he left off.

I'm happy to hear it. I must admit that I had some reservations about him being able to come back and I wondered out loud on here that he might receive a medical and there by open up another scholly for one of the incoming kids. I'm glad I missed on that prediction.

Glad he may make it back to the field. Everyone keeps talking about Him, Ingram, Grant, and Richardson....I have a feeling the back that will have a great year is Matchett. I haven't seen much on him but from what I've seen he is gonna be a good one.

I can uinderstand Upchurch and Ingram being in front of him (they have contributed) but to put Grant (One decent season two years ago) and Richardson before him seems premature.

Griffin is listed as the 2nd string on the spring depth chart?? he had a few carries last year but I wasn't too impressed (granted I'm not at practice to see his development).

Matchett (again just based of his high school videos, and practice videos over the past year) seems to be a physical hard to takle guy like ingram with the speed and shiftyness of grant.

What do you guys (and gals) think....how does Matchett stack up against the others.

Matchett may be that big bruising runner that CNS likes to use in the 4th to punish opposing Ds. It justs takes time for some to get a grasp and with Ingram jumping out like he did, it made it easy to put the redshirt on some.
