Illinois gave Bill Cubit a new contract in November 2015 (after he filled in for the previous coach who was fired in August 2015). The new AD starts his job in March and fires the Cubit on his first day. With no coach, their Spring practice has been delayed.

Taking that job is a disaster in the making. My bet is that there will be no Spring practice (won't be able to find and hire a quality staff before exams). It will be similar to when Shula came into Alabama with a rush to install an offensive and defensive system in August.

Illinois is a coaching graveyard or career killer, much like Kansas! No one in their right mind would touch that job unless you are on the tail end of your career and were guaranteed 3 years!

So Lovie gets the job and a 6-year, $21 million contract. They were paying Cubit 2-years at $600K+. The AD comes from the football powerhouse of Washington University-St. Louis so he must know what he's doing.

Since 2011, Illinois has had three athletic directors, two men's basketball coaches, two women's basketball coaches. Smith will be its fourth football coach.
