🏈 I Hope Bama Never Signs Another Non-Mobile QB

Several things:

1. @bamachine I was also at a total loss why we kept running right when it was obvious that the right side of the line was a total s#it show. I mean Dom was literally wiffing on run blocks. I could not believe my eyes, and neither could Henry... several times I saw Henry pull himself off the ground and look over toward Dom like "WTF?" It had to be that we trusted the left side of the line to be able to pull more so than the right. At the goal line however no idea why Henry would run right. lol Again though it can not be overstated how badly Dom played.

2. I actually thought the DB's were in position most of the time, but Watson was just making NFL passes that were nearly impossible to defend much like several of the TD passes that Tebow made in the 2008 SECCG. Cyrus gave too much room on his TD, and seemed to be a little passive in run support. Not sure what was up with him, but everyone else was getting beat by perfect passes which are nearly impossible to defend.

3. @Crimon&WhiteG & @Reuben The reason the mobile QB's are more likely to beat Bama with their arms is because they extend the play with their legs. Have you ever tried to cover someone that can run really fast for 5,6,7 seconds or more ? Nearly impossible. Our DLine was beating their OL consistently, but they couldnt get their hands on Watson. Several times I saw our DL beat the OL, and then just stand there because they didnt want to lose contain. Also you cant commit as many players to coverage when you have to spy on a mobile QB. All these things play right into the hands of the mobile QB passing game.

There is absolutely nothing that Coker did this year that a mobile QB could not also do. Why not have the added benefit of being able to scramble ? The college defenses simply cannot handle a true dual threat QB. If Coker were able to scramble surely he would not have taken 20 yards worth of losses on sacks which seemed to almost always happen on first down thus dooming that drive to failure. Meanwhile Watson would somehow turn the same type of plays into ten yard gains.

Players like Watson dont come along very often, but there are plenty of solid mobile QB's all over college football. Its not like they are unicorns or something impossible to find. Point being you can run a pro style offense with a mobile QB, and there is no reason not to do it. Fight fire with fire.

My last point... imagine if Watson was playing for Bama the other night, and Coker was playing for Clemson. Blowout.

Minkah did play better as the game went on and broke up a cpl passes in the second half but he got burned three times in the first and called for a flag on another (tho I guess it was okay for Clemson's DBs to hold Ridley all night but I digress). His problem was he just wanted to run with the receiver instead of trying to look for the ball. I thought Marlon played really well tho and Ronnie Harrison even tho he had a cpl mental lapses which looked like it almost made Cyrus' head explode.

Yeah, Marlon and Minkah both had two PBU's, and Harrison's strip in the end zone may have saved the game. Geno had a bunch of tackles, both on run support and chasing the QB, and Eddie had a key pick. If Eddie stays, I'm excited about our secondary next year. Defense, offense and special teams, we had our money players contribute as expected, and unexpected breakouts by role players or those who hadn't shined before. We played against a good team led by an outstanding player, and we were up to the challenge because of our team. A true team victory.

Agreed. There is no down side to having a QB that can make plays with his feet... Even if that's not the game plan.

These kids are no longer just statues who're strictly pocket passers.... They get trained much harder at an early age and get well rounded workouts.

Barnett and Hurts are awesome recruits. Hopefully 1 pans out

I think there were issues with blocking but on some of those sacks Coker held the ball longer than 5 seconds which is just too long. Partly because he didn't want to force it and partly because they had great coverage. I don't think the line play was that bad at all, Jackson had some times he got beat, sure but there were plenty of chances to chip on the defensive ends that weren't taken. Most of what frustrates me was when communication and seemingly play calling were problems. We checked multiple times and generally right into the blitz which just didn't make sense a couple of times we blew our routes and completely forgot to account for certain rushers

I'm old enough now to know never to say never. LOL! I think the statement of hoping Alabama "never" signs another non mobile qb is painting with too broad a brush. I would not turn down a kid who has elite passing skills just because he wasn't considered "mobile".

As for the soft coverage, not on their last drive but on other drives, I think it was part of trying to contain Watson. Cyrus was playing soft, just in case Watson took off. It bit us in the ass a few times but I think it was schemed that way.

Yeah, Coker was just horrible, winning every game he started, and not even being named the #1 guy until well into the season. Splitting 1st team reps all off season. Damn I cant beleive all he did was win the Championship game.
I mean who wants a guy that goes 263 393 (66.9%) with 21 TD's and only 8 INT's? Playing behind a line who couldn't stop a sneeze?
No, lets get some happy feet little bitch who winds up being a cancer to the team...
This.

All of this.

Yup.

Playing with depth to keep everything underneath him, while eyeing the QB.

Yeah thats part of why they didnt have the big home run plays they are used to but the 20+ yard plays killed us.

If Eddie stays and Tony Brown manages to get his head on straight I think that secondary has the potential to be 2011/2012 levels of good. Minkah and Marlon both in their second years as starters, Eddie there will all of his experience, and then Ronnie Harrison or Hootie taking over for Geno plus Kendall Sheffield and Maurice Smith. Tons of depth.

"eyeing" the QB seemed to only work when Evans was the one doing it. That kid is ridiculously explosive... Anytime we play a running QB he should be the full time spy

Trying to make Foster the "spy" was a huge mistake IMO. Evans and Ronnie Harrison should have had that designation the entire game or even Mo Smith because its not like Watson is so strong that they needed Foster's strength.

Getting incredible, but young and inexperienced, talent on the field when they haven't quite mastered the complexity of the defense is done very well by Saban. Special teams, straightforward assignments like "stay with the QB" allow them to play fast - and Evans is very fast. He almost seems like a cross between Reuben's striking strength and CJ's speed.

This.......I have had a hard on for Evans since he set foot on campus. Wearing #32 I have said he was the re-incarnate of CJ since I first saw him in the uni.

I have extremely high hopes for Evans. I think he may be a bit stronger than CJ was. Kid uses his speed and leverages well against bigger blockers. Can't wait to see him on the field full time next year.
