If I were to bet I'd wager we see four or five different groupings in the spring on the offensive line.

If you take Grant Hill, Dominick Jackson, and Austin Shepard you've got three guys who can play guard or tackle. Arie was so off and on last season it's hard to say where he's going to fit: IE: starting or a back-up. Sometimes he was dominant, and at others he seemed lost. Now let's add Leon Brown to the mix. And we're still leaving guys like Brandon Hill, Luatua, Moore...on the bench!

I believe Cam plays, but doesn't start (see CyKo's role as a true frosh.)

Kelly or Lindsey?

Is your head spinning yet? At this point, mine is...

Same, except I have Coker the official starter, Eddie Jackson starting at CB, Jarren Reed beating out Ivory, and then idk...I feel like Grant Hill will see some playing time at RG. Competition at linebacker will be interesting. You have talented guys like Lee and Ragland competing at that Sam spot and Lee looked really impressive on special teams last year.

Hard to tell now honestly. There's always that one freshman that comes in and messes all of our predictions up. Of course that's a good thing.

Since you've brought up linebackers...

Did you forget Dickson?

<!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> @Birdman37 <!-- END TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> There's one suspicion I have about our linebackers that comes into play with your suggestion that Devall starts at JACK.

I suspect we're going to see some positions switches this season and among those is Devall. As evidenced by statement regarding having guys with that "fast twitch" on defense I'm wondering if we see Devall move to the inside.

bamaraider I meant to have Eddie Jackson sharing the role with Jones too.
TerryP If Devall moved inside, Dickson and Evans sharing the role at JACK? Dont see anyone keeping Foster off the field this year even if that meant moving to SAM or sharing the other insider backer role with Devall.

Small hijack here for a second. I've pretty well retired the use of SAM, MIKE, WILL, and JACK from my vocabulary when it comes to our linebackers. 2012 pretty well sealed that for me with Hubbard playing what would traditionally be called the SAM position but the way he played (as in position) was so JACK like. Then at times he was actually playing on the opposite side of the field than the traditional SAM—in what we'd call a JACK. (In a sense it's a lot like trying to call our safeties strong and free because the roles change depending on the call.)

That's not even mentioning when we move to nickel and we're playing a linebacker on the line...

All that said, I'm sticking with interior and outside.

It's pretty safe to say DePreist is going to get the nod at one of the ILB positions. I'd agree it's going to be hard to keep Foster off the field but we can't dismiss what Ragland offers.

I don't think there's been an off-season where it's been this difficult to project who'll be where—in any position group. People are inclined to to put Yeldon as our #1 guy in the RB rotation and I see a lot of areas that Henry has more to offer; and vice-versa, of course.

Think about it for a few minutes...

How many guys are there on this 2014 you can point to and say "he's going to be a starter?" I'd say four on defense; Jackson, Robinson, DePriest, and Collins. Offense? Three with Shepard, Cooper, and Vogler. However, with Shepard, now you've got a good argument on whether he'll continue as the RT. I suspect he will.

And, for what it's worth, I have doubts we'll leave spring with clear definitions on a lot of positions. More so on defense, but I suspect we'll see several groupings on the offensive line going through fall camp.

I thought I saw reports of Dickson leaving the team?

TerryP Like you, I see SEVERAL different Olines being used this Spring. I'm not sold on AK staying with the Ones. I see Robinson and Jackson battling for the LT spot, big Leon looked strong at RG, I think Shepard stays at RT but Grant Hill could push him to a reserve role.
As for defense, it will be very interesting to see what package groupings we run out onto the field. I suspect our base group will surprise us while our "rabbit" packages will be INSANE!!

I don't think Cam will get the nod as the LT. A good amount of playing time? Yes. Similar to what we saw with CyKo in his true frosh year.

TerryP I can see your point with the Cam /CyKo comparison. I do think his being here for Spring helps his chances though. I'll be honest with you and the others, I like Lindsey over Kelly at Center.

I came pretty close to editing my post earlier and putting Kelly in as one of the guys that won't lose his position. I didn't because when it comes down to the nuts and bolts about these two I've serious doubts Lindsey would have started a game last year if it wasn't due to Kelly getting hurt.

One of the things that I find confusing is we've got the best example—personnel wise—in any of the years we've had this staff of getting the best five on the field. Along with Lindsey being able to play two spots on the line (very highly regarded as a guard prospect) there are several that can play more than one position. I recall reading where Dom said he feels most comfortable at a guard. Grant's footwork gives him the ability to slide outside to tackle. Last, but certainly not least (in regards to Cam) I can't forget we ended up playing Barrett at tackle—a guy who is undoubtedly better as an interior lineman—when we had CyKo in as a true frosh.

Having a situation like 2012, when we knew who it was that was going to take the starting positions save one...versus, having a situation like what's coming up this fall when we've got as many as nine guys who can start? Both are equally exciting to me as a fan.
