🏈 Hurts, Bateman, Barnett and the QB competition

If there was ever the right time to come with the Jalen Hurts package, this is it. With the way our spread concepts and hurry up approach has been clicking with Kiffin, it's almost a given our OC is even more enamored with creating variations of a theme. If Hurts shows he's responsible and mature with the ball, I can see him getting a heavier dose as the season progresses. Times are a changing with the Tide.

If Hurts becomes a special package, then it's not a special package. Everyone will know what he's in there to do. Back in the olden days, Coach Bryant used to substitute the entire offense. It was used as a spark and to give the 1s a chance to see what was happening from a different angle. If the 2s scored, they got to stay in a little longer. Opposing defenses couldn't scheme for the "special package" because they ran the same plays, but they had different strengths.

I agree. Same with the entire Wildcat BS teams run. Wow, direct snap to the running back, what's gonna happen? Unless he cuts him loose to throw, it'll get sniffed out quickly.

Here's the thing I love about Jalen Hurts:
First of all he's cool, calm, and poised in the pocket. He's deadly accurate on the run.

HERE'S THE KEY: Every single year we have an offense that can look great at times, and then totally stall out at other times. The problem is that we've never had a dynamic playmaker at QB. If Jalen Hurts is what everyone thinks he is, he's without a doubt our best option. Imagine Alabama with a QB that can actually run the football, and make big pass plays. Imagine Alabama having a dual threat guy as good as Johnny Manziel, and having him for 3 years - that's what Jalen Hurts looks like.
Blake Barnett is a fine QB, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't be upset to see him be the guy. He's got a great arm. BUT Barnett isn't very mobile, at least not in the dangerous, strike fear into the opponent sense. He also doesn't seem to be very consistent. I could see him throwing costly INTs.

Jalen Hurts is the best QB Saban has had at Alabama. He came in and in a matter of 3 months on campus, was able to march the offense all over the field at the spring game - BETTER than Barnett. He's worked out all summer, and now comes into fall camp wowing spectators, and impressing everyone.
This is the guy, and they better fucking give the job to him if he keeps showing out.
Hurts just has an aura around him that's hard to explain. Cam Newton has the aura I'm talking about, where it just seems like the guy is incapable of really messing up - like in the spring game where he completed that long pass that got tipped into Cam Sims arms.
Hurts. is. the guy. Take a fucking chance. If we can make it to the playoffs with Blake Sims, we can DAMN sure make it with Jalen Hurts.

If Hurts becomes a special package, then it's not a special package.
OP reemphasizes my earlier point ...
They typically don't work. Bring in a special package, you key on the package. Wildcat is different because of the numbers.
...while riz has an equal point on the pure number aspect.

I know right?
Say this out loud.

Nick Saban is going to burn a shirt on a quarterback to run the wildcat package.

Why does the package have to be special? He can come in and run the offense to his strengths. His skill set alone may allow for that much diversity. If the starter is less than overwhelming, why not continue to get the next man up to speed with live reps?

Every fan has their own opinion as to who should start at QB. It is A LOT like the upcoming election to be honest. We can keep throwing our opinions out there but people already have their minds made up regardless of the facts, experience in the system, Saban's track record, etc.

I have said it before and will say it again. I think CNS starts Bateman. This isn't an endorsement for him, just going with Saban's history. I don't think he will stay in the #1 position throughout the year. I think Barnett will make a move and pass him. I don't see CNS burning the shirt on Hurts for any "special package". I feel that Hurts gets shirted unless we have some injuries. Cornwell will be the odd man out in this race.

Look, Kiffin has already hinted at packages for Jalen.

If he's already good enough as a FRESHMAN to have a set of 15-20 plays, just give him the fooking offense.

Coach Saban's coaching methodology is Whole-part-whole, right? If he's already got a "whole part" of 15-20 plays, then give him 10 more each week. Let him grow with the offense, and let the offense grow with him. There's also a schematic advantage to that also. Every week is something new, so opposing defenses will be guessing as well.

If he's already that good, and indications from the staff point that way, then go ahead and give him the keys. The last 2 years of indecision on a QB has been fun, but damn... let's have a QB that we can build a future around.

Whoever the starter is in game 1 won't play the entire game. Where the opportunity exists, Kiffin and Saban will insert the #2. However, in game #2, I think you'll see a revolving door at the QB slot so that they can see how each of the top 3-4 responds and how the team responds to them. IMO, regardless of his physical talents, I don't think it will be Hurts. Defensive recognition and checkoffs will be key and I haven't seen a freshman able to do that, especially when there are multiple non-freshman that have more experience in the offense.

Look, Kiffin has already hinted at packages for Jalen.

He's also said "the team was excited about his potential and future." That can be taken several ways. I've seen more than one media member, as well as a lot of Bama fans, say they interpreted comments from this weekend to mean it's a two person race.

Kiffin went on to mention Jalen was still learning the system. In my opinion, I'd rather see a quarterback learn the system and then work with his skill set.

It's funny ... I don't have a single worry about the position no matter who it is that takes the snaps. It's all about the efficiency.

If he's already that good, and indications from the staff point that way, then go ahead and give him the keys. The last 2 years of indecision on a QB has been fun, but damn... let's have a QB that we can build a future around.

Build the future around? Let's say Cooper gets the nod this year. Bama would enter 2017 with a returning starter.

Ya know, the thing is ... if Jalen's head is on as straight as they say it is, a battle for the starting role in 2018 won't bother him, at all.

Wednesday Practice Report, Suttles:

The team worked inside for the first time of fall camp today, which gave us our first good view of the running backs (I've posted a short video of one drill of Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris below). Here is what I saw during the limited viewing period.

The running backs went through drills in the following order: Bo Scarbrough, Damien Harris, B.J. Emmons and Joshua Jacobs. After seeing them up close, especially their lower bodies, I have no doubt they could contribute this season. That is IF they learn the offense/assignments, including blocking.

Being indoors also gave me my best view of the quarterbacks thus far in fall camp, and from what I've watched I just don't think Cooper Bateman has the adequate arm strength to do everything a starting quarterback is asked to do. Unless a quarterback can stretch the field, he isn't going to maximize what an offense can be. And with this collection of wide receivers, Alabama would be leaving points off the board if it can't stretch the field. That said, Blake Barnett threw a nice deep ball today as did Jalen Hurts. The key to this whole thing starts Saturday with the first scrimmage. If Barnett doesn't turn the ball over, manages the offense, moves the offense a little bit, he will make a major move towards the starting job. You all know what I think of Jalen Hurts. I think he's the most talented quarterback on the roster. He's also a true freshman. This thing is a long way from over, but I wanted to share my thoughts after watching them closely today.

I watched the dime defense and this was the secondary. Kendall Sheffield was again opposite Marlon Humphrey. Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison were the safeties. Minkah Fitzpatrick was the Star and Hootie Jones was the money.

That's a pretty bold statement by Suttles. Interesting.

Hootie Jones getting a shot with the 1's is pretty cool. If Mo Smith stays, he's not in that group. Been looking forward to seeing what that kid can do for a long time... Long way until Sept 3 though.

I'm sure Sheffield is going to get tested a ton this weekend. All of them will. If he can make it out alive this weekend he's in good shape.

Nick Saban transcript: 8-10-2016

"I see our players making a little bit of progress and some improvement each and every day. We had a little rain today so we had to go inside, which made the conditions for them a little bit easier, I think. It's easier for them to focus. But I think the No. 1 thing that I'm trying to get the players to understand is, mature competitors can go out there no matter what the circumstance, what the situation, playing early, playing late, crowd's against you, crowd's for you, hot, cold, whatever it is, and you can focus and do your job from an effort standpoint, from a mental toughness standpoint, from a responsibility to execute, knowing what to do and how to do it, and be able to focus on that in that particular time and the best way to do that is to do it every day in practice regardless of what the circumstances are in practice.

"The passion and perseverance that it takes for every guy to challenge himself to be able to do that, especially young players… We've played a lot of young players around here in the past and they've done a fantastic job for us. But that's the thing that they have to show that they can do. Have the maturity as a competitor to be able to stay focused in critical times so they can do their job consistently for the team. That's what we're trying to evaluate. Because this fall camp is all about how many guys can we put in a position that can help us play winning football that we're going to invest our time in to coach? And every day in practice, especially when the scrimmages come, we're making those kinds of evaluations on all of the personnel because when camp is over and we start playing these games, those are the guys that we're going to have to invest our time. So there are some young guys out there that have shown that at times but for us to have the kind of depth on our team that we need to have, we're going to need some of these guys to step up for us in certain places, certain positions on the field. That's what we're trying to get evaluated right now.

"We're very, very sorry to hear of the passing of John Saunders and I just want his family to know our thoughts and our prayers are with his family and friends. He was a first-class gentleman and a first-class journalist and someone that we always really enjoyed working with. Very, very sorry to hear about his passing.

"We have done everything that we can do institutionally to allow the conference to make the decision about whatever they decide is in the best interest of the conference and the SEC rules relative to Maurice Smith. So that is past us now. It is beyond us. We don't really need to talk about that anymore and I don't have any other comments to make about it. We're trying to focus on the guys we have here and what we need to do to help those guys have a chance to be successful."

We saw Josh Jacobs limping around out there. What's his status?

"He has a little back contusion but I think he'll be just fine in a day or two. He's day-to-day. He actually practiced one day with it and we decided not to practice him for a day. We're just trying to get some of the swelling out. I think he'll be fine."

What have you seen from Kendall Sheffield and Bradley Bozeman?

"Bradley Bozeman has done a really good job. I thought he had a really good spring. He's a tough guy. He really understands. He can play center, guard or tackle for us. So we're really pleased with the progress he's made. He gives us a lot of depth at a lot of different positions.

"Kendall Sheffield, I think we just keep trying to work reps, reps, reps, so that he can play his position with a little more naturally instinctive reactions. He certainly has a lot of ability and we're certainly trying to bring it out of him in every way we can. Right now it's a work in progress and he is making progress. We certainly would like to be able to enhance that with a little better coaching on our part."

How unique is it to have a player with the size and skill set of Brandon Greene?

"Brandon really last year couldn't hardly focus. We had him playing tackle, we had him playing tight end so it was tough for him to focus. This year, this spring, this fall camp, this summer, we said 'Hey, look, you're going to be a tight end.' I think to have a guy like that at that position certainly creates a lot of problems because he's a mismatch player in the C-area. I know he gives us some problems in practice when he's in there and he's blocking outside backers. The guy is very athletic. Even though he's not real fast, he's got really good hands. He's somebody you can throw the ball to and he can be hard to tackle. I think he's lost a little bit of weight, not a whole lot. I kind of like where we are at that position. That position was a concern for us a year ago. O.J. Howard always being an outstanding player and someone we could count on but not having a second guy that could be a blocker and kind of a guy that could compliment him. I don't think that's an issue (this year). And I like the way the young guys are coming along at the position as well. I feel a lot better about the tight end position."

What would you like to see from Calvin Ridley this year? Another good WR from Florida, is that by design or happenstance?

"I think it just works out that way. There are a lot of good players in Florida. We've been very fortunate here to get a couple of them each year and they've been very, very productive for us. It's been a really, really good recruiting area for us but it's not necessarily that we go there and look for just one position. We'd like to recruit any player that they have there and we have other good players from there. Eddie Jackson is another player who has been very productive at another position.

"Calvin Ridley, he's one of those guys that we talk about mature competitors, young guys, he showed that last year and was very, very productive. Made great improvement throughout the season and ended up having great production. Made a lot of big plays. He's a hard guy to cover. He's gotten a little bigger and stronger and he certainly has big play potential. I have not seen any sort of attitude out of him that he's not still working hard, still trying to get better, and he's doing all the things that he needs to do to be sort of a dominant player at his position and hopefully we'll be able to see great production from him this year."

How have the RBs progressed so far and how important is experience at that position?

"Well, we've had some guys here that have not had experience that have played as freshman that have been very, very productive, whether it was Mark when he was a freshman, Trent when he was a freshman, Eddie when he was a freshman, Yeldon when he was a freshman. They all played when they were freshmen extremely well. Experience and knowledge helps at every position but I think these guys have made nice progress and I think they're very capable. We'll just have to see how it goes when you get the opportunity in a competitive situation and how much that experience is going to pay off for them where they'll be able to overcome their lack of experience and play with confidence and be very productive."

How much has Mo Smith's departure changed what you're doing in the secondary, especially with where Minkah is?

"I think what we're focused on is the guys we have in the secondary right now. We're out there working with them every day and we're going to try to put the best parts together that we can. And we've got some young guys that I think can be really good players but it's a work in progress to sort of get those guys to know and understand not only what we do, but all the adjustments we have to make for what other teams do when we play them. It's going to be important that some of these young guys provide us with the depth that we need and there's a lot of opportunity for these guys to play and I think they're working hard and focused on it and making improvement every day. But it's too early to tell how it's going to all fall in place for us. We have lots of practices left before that first game and hopefully some of these guys will sort of be able to get enough knowledge and experience in this practice time that they're confident enough to go out and contribute in a role for us to help us win."

Minkah's versatility playing corner and star?

"Last year he just had to play star and never really had to play much corner. This year he's having to do both. I'd like for a guy not to have to do that. I'd like to have a guy that could play corner or a guy that could play star so that guy could always sort of play in one position. I'm not sure we have the luxury to do that at this point relative to the players that we have available. So he may have to do that. He's very versatile and he's bright, he's smart, he's very conscientious, he works hard every day. So if there's anybody who can do it, I think he's certainly the right kind of guy to do it. That may be how we end up this year."

I'm sure Sheffield is going to get tested a ton this weekend. All of them will. If he can make it out alive this weekend he's in good shape.

"Kendall Sheffield, I think we just keep trying to work reps, reps, reps, so that he can play his position with a little more naturally instinctive reactions. We certainly would like to be able to enhance that with a little better coaching on our part."
