🏈 Hurts, Bateman, Barnett and the QB competition

After reading around the past 12 hours or so I'm seeing one theme a lot with Blake. People are using different words; all of them read like synonyms for what they are seeing as pocket presence. Confident is a word I've seen more than a dozen times and I've seen poised quite a bit as well.

Here's where I have to call a time-out. It's my opinion Blake looked good in the pocket last spring. He seemed poised, confident, you name the adjective. BUT, he ended up having a bad spring when it's taken in its entire context. (see comments from several on scrimmages.)

As a fan I find it encouraging seeing strong practice performances by these guys even though I can't set aside these were situational drills.

....ugh... as much as things change, they remain the same.

The QB that doesn't beat the team himself will be the eventual starter.
Whether that is determined before the first game or a few into it, he will be the starter. Most sports are about what's between the ears, especially the QB. Bateman got replaced by Coker in the Ole Miss game due to his bad decisions AND the fact that Ole Miss was taking such a deep lead. It is clear to me that Kiffin had specific game plan for Bateman, in particular the read option. He had several opportunities to hold the ball & run, but he made the wrong read. Even the commentators mentioned this early on. Bateman wasn't going to be able to sling it to a win. After his last interception, it was over and the game plan for Coker was to not turn the ball over & keep them out of negative downs. Then as Coker used his feet & his blood & guts he won the team over after that, despite some of his own bad plays.

Once Coker won the team over, it was his & it didn't matter if he could sling it past the uprights. CNS keeps talking about the QB that makes good decisions & winning the team over. I'm telling you now, that other crap will not matter, despite any deficiencies. This is why Sims won the position (Coker was lost in the huddle for all of 2014) & this is why Coker won the position 2015 (grittiness counts, in football......especially at Alabama).

Just curious, how many yards is Cooper Bateman capable of giving our offense this season? For the last four seasons, a balanced offense for Bama has been 3000 yards passing. Can Bateman really put up that kind of numbers?

In our sorta tribute thread to Coker, some were very qualifying in their praise for his skill level, but he threw for more yards that McCarron in his best year. The truth is all these guys were playmakers. I don't think you can throw for 3000 yards and not be. Bateman doesn't look like the next.

Does anyone else think, that maybe, the reason Coker developed so late in the season, was because of the lack of reps in fall practice as they were split up during the QB battle? And that MAYBE if they were to gamble and go ahead and pick the SQB now, that they ( Saban, Kiffin et.al.) would have more time to develop that QB? Yes I know that they get payed a lot more than I do to make those decisions.

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there. In August 2015 practice, it was a coin flip for who would be the starting QB. CNS could have picked one, but it might not have been the right one. Bateman didn't start the Ole Miss game (after not starting the first two games) because it was his turn. He did things in practice that earned him the start. While he didn't have a bad start, he wasn't moving the team to score. Coker came in and took command. Players rallied behind him and the rest is history.

Which brings a question to mind.

When do teams insert these "special packages?" (When has Alabama inserted one?)

If this team is inserting Jalen for a special package, they aren't in a favorable down, or distance, situation. I don't want either.

Moral of the story: Live game reps mean more than wowing them in practice.

They typically don't work. Bring in a special package, you key on the package. Wildcat is different because of the numbers.
