🏈 Hurts, Bateman, Barnett and the QB competition

Dabaxter? Is that you? Paul's not here man!

Nobody wants to see Bateman. He's got the lowest ceiling in the group.
Hurts is an absolute stud. He's like Johnny Manziel level at scrambling and throwing on the run. Considering we're gonna be weaker than normal at tailback (I hear Bo is already hobbled by an injury), we're gonna need a playmaker at QB.
Hurts could be our first star QB under Saban.

Boom. I'm sold

I hadn't heard Bo was injured. We don't need that... I think we'd be just as accurate at debating the future of Tesla stock price. We're predicting things that we have no control over, that we know little about. What we do know, the fact is, we have the best person alive on our side making the decision. He knows more about his stuff than all of us combined. Let's just wait a few more weeks and watch it play out. No one knows much more than anyone else on here. I'm excited for that opening kickoff at Cowboys stadium. Pretty good season results when we open the season in Jerrys house....

There is nothing wrong with Bo. He's totally fine.

I want to see Bateman. I want to see if he has matured since the Ole Pi$$ game last year. I want to see if he has trust in his eyes and doesn't assume when running the zone read. I

I disagree that we need a playmaker at QB this year. We simply need a QB that can get the ball into the hands of our playmakers, Ridley, Stewart, Foster, Deiter, OJ, etc.

Hurts could be a star QB, but so could Bateman, Barnett, or Cornwell. Again, we don't need a "star" at the QB position. Give me another game manager that is low risk, I'll be happy!

We don't need a star at QB, @TerryP and @uagrad93 .

But, we DO need a QB who doesn't throw wobbly ducks beyond 20 yards.

If Bateman can't consistently hit a ball beyond 20 yards, defenses will shut us down with Cover 1 or Cover 2. You won't need deep coverage if there's no deep threat. And that means that our run game will largely be stuffed also.

You HAVE to at least hit 2-3 deep balls a game to keep the safeties backed off.

I don't see Bateman being able to perform that job.

Bateman has nowhere near the short area quickness the agility, not elusiveness of Hurts. He may be able to run a 40 in street clothes nearly as fast as Hurts, but it doesn't translate to the field.

Just as important, Bateman is awful at the deep ball. In Kiffin's offense you have to be able to hit the deep ball. Some of the time they'll be wide open, and Bateman can scarcely hit those, let alone deep balls Sims and Coker were completing. Hurts ability to throw on the run, and to keep his eyes downfield while scrambling outside the pocket are traits Bateman will never have and can't come close to equalling.

I would agree that we don't need a duck thrower. I disagree with the comment that you HAVE to at least hit 2-3 deep balls a game to keep the safeties backed off. I would say that you have to be willing to throw the deep ball 3-5 times a game to keep them honest. I want consistency from the QB position, I did as a player and as a coach, you want it, everyone on here wants that. We all know that is what Saban wants.

Keep in mind there is not a known quantity in the backfield for the first time in a long time. The OL should be good... But asking them to dominate early on is a lot.

IMO the passing game will be leaned on as much this year than it has since 2010. Yes I think Bo is a stud, but he's going to make more mistakes than we are used to seeing. I loved what I saw from Harris last Spring but he's not on the same level as the last 4 starters. I could see this offense passing to open up the run quite a bit, which could put more pressure on the QB to make some plays down the field.

Between Spring games and his time vs Ole Miss, I can't say I've ever seen Bateman look like a player. Saban always values the guy who makes the fewest mistakes, but if Hurts is in the same ball park and can make some great plays, he could get a shot. Something special about that kid between his physical ability and maturity. Seems wise beyond his years. And it's experience will be a huge factor, cause Bateman has about 1 games worth over all these guys.

Are all these bold proclamations about how great Hurts is the best at everything football related about Jalen Hurts? The guy who has never played a real down and has only been present for spring training and one day of fall camp?

@russb8903 He's one unique case. A great deal of his skill set comes from growing up as a coaches son. Through the spring, the offense was easier for him to pick up than it's been with past quarterbacks.

There is quite a story being built around Jalen. I'm not a big fan of some of the expectations I've seen voiced/written etc.

Look at that story for a second. Phil Savage has a report of an afternoon of camp work at Manning's Pass Academy, right? A camp. A passing academy. Since his report now there's an issue with any pass over 20 yards is wobbly. The thing that intrigues me is that wasn't a subject of conversation up until Phil's comments. There were other critiques about Cooper, I don't recall wobbly being one.

Personally, I just don't see one afternoon as something we should be taking to the bank. Maybe he was just having a bad afternoon. I assume there's a possibility they were working with him and changing a few things with his mechanics. I don't know.

I do know guys can separate themselves quickly in fall camp. I know Saban said the three have all improved but there's nothing that's led me to think the rotation has changed. If anything, I could see a 2A and 2B scenario going into the first scrimmage.

IMO, you want a good question to ponder? Where's Barnett's head compared to spring?

My main concern this year is that while we have immense talent, we have no PROVEN commodities at center, QB, or RB. The entire middle portion of our offense is being replaced. Do any of the teams we play early have an experienced D-Line? Could be a problem...not trying to be a pessimist, but just thinking out loud.
