If he doesn't win the starting spot (wouldn't be surprised if he did, at this point) he will redshirt. Period.

All other QBs have already used their redshirt. In terms of playing time, he would need to be significantly better than the #2, #3 or #4 QB to not be redshirted.

I tucked away all the accolades on Hurts simulating Watson leading up to the natty. He runs the spread better than anyone else at the controls. Otherwise, someone else would have been doing it. I like a spread package even if someone else is starting. I liked the wildcat Ingram and company ran during McElroy regime. Let's run some veer spread because we can.

I think we have seen the offense become more and more of a hybrid over the last few years going from the traditional single back (or i-form) with some spread formations to the pistol to the wildcat to adding the read option with Blake (and even Coker and Bateman last year). I dont know if Kiffin or Saban would be very comfortable just doing a spread style package with Jalen in the game unless they just want to utilize him, kind of like the Wildcat, with read option, but if Bateman is your guy why would you need Jalen to do the read option? Bateman is supposedly the fastest guy on the team (that may be pre-Jalen but I'm not sure). If the coaches think Jalen is the guy he needs to be the guy. Otherwise he needs to shirt.

I think the test Bateman failed last season was more the Blake Sims role. I seriously doubt anyone is running a close second to Hurts ability to put pressure on the defense. Injuries, shaky QB play again or even unforeseen attrition at running back can cause us to look hard at Jalen at least as a package as he grows.

Bateman and Barnett can run the exact same plays that Jalen can. So I say again, unless Jalen has passed both those player and is going to start he will not see the field.

The Jalencat is happening. Think Tim Tebow at Florida his freshman year. The guy is just too advanced to redshirt, as he has a unique skill set that we can, and will, use.

Bateman will start, but Jalen is going to play.

@rollsaban , the only way he plays is IF he passes Barnett and Cornwell on the depth chart. I and most on here would agree that it goes against Saban's MO. You can dig deep into his time at all of the other schools and a true FROSH isn't going to play.

Not that out of the realm. Kiffin makes me believe this is a possibility because of his belief system. If Jalen can convince our defense he was Watson, he can run a package.

I was watching the Cooper Bateman demo in live time with real bombs going off. The trepidations still exist for this year's model and it's understandable. Lights can go on and leadership can be a learned process, but until then, I tend to favor all options open.
