🏈 How's the crowd? A panoramic view of Alabama A-Day attendance at kickoff

i never did understand why so many people put so much stock in the attendance numbers of a spring game.

attendance doesn't mean a thing for a scrimmage.

but of course with a low attendance for a spring game all the talking heads will be talking about how the fans aren't behind the coach anymore and how the program may be on a downward spiral. they equate small spring game attendance numbers with the fans being mad at the coach and team and wanting the coach gone. which is just asinine.

at the "game" earlier today i heard two older guys behind us talking about how boring the "game" was and that they shoulda just stayed home.

what the hell did they expect? did they expect Coach Saban to reveal his entire book of plays for all to see and game-plan against this early in the year? did they want the players to go full speed the entire "game" and risk injury during a practice? there's enough risk during spring practice, it's better to not risk it any further at the last practice before summer workouts. during the season? that's different. they're supposed to go full-out and take those risks. but in practice they shouldn't take all of those risks. that's one of the reasons they don't run the ball back on kickoffs.

We talk about the cyclical nature of college football, a lot. Here's an example, a rather quick one, of how it runs.

It's funny to me remembering how people talked about the Tide's fan base and the 90K+ who showed up for Saban's first A-day game. Fans from other schools and conferences chose to make fun of the fan support UNTIL, suddenly, they were showing up in numbers that exceeded some schools attendance during an actual fall football game.

And now, we're sitting here listening, reading, and watching people try to draw a conclusion on the fans attitudes because it was the lowest attendance in the Saban era (yet reported largest this spring?)

Far be it from me to expect rational thought from college football fans, but I can dream a little, right?

The way dates fell on the calendar this year just didn't line up. And the thing is, I don't believe you can point to one decision maker for blame.

The day before Easter comes into play. Saban wanting spring break to fall where it does during spring camp comes in as well. But, when spring break comes isn't his decision, it's on the academic side.

Bottom line...folks, we're truly in the off-season. There's only a little baseball and softball left; soak it up while you can.
