šŸˆ How Jalen Hurts' progression is "night and day" from last year

The star receiver was more blunt when describing the difference in starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

ā€œI think it’s night and day. He’s gotten so much better,ā€ Ridley said. ā€œHe sits in there and sometimes when I’m not in, and I look and he’s stepping up, making good throws. So, he’s gotten a lot better.ā€

ā€œI just see him step up, when the pocket breaks down, he just steps into it and makes a good throw,ā€ Ridley said. ā€œAnd sometimes he used to when the pocket breaks down, he would take off. And now he’s getting a lot better at it. It's going to help us a lot.

Possibly because you've never seen him patient in the pocket?

Let's not forget instructions when talking about instincts, right?

Any reasonable success Jalen enjoyed through the air, I consider patient enough to get the job done. He had at least 6 games where I thought he demonstrated a good feel for the forward pass. For me, patient enough based on the situation we put him in, not necessarily total passing yardage, is just fine.

It would also seem like a good idea to stop asking Jalen to run the ball in out read-option as much if we want to tone down the inclination to get the first down on his own. But even if he tones it down, it won't turn him into McCarron in the pocket. I don't even think we want that.

That's part of the direction I've understood is planned before Daboll's name even came up in our conversations here.

The qb shouldn't run the ball more than 3 - 4 times per game, not counting scrambles on passing plays and only then to avoid a sack.

That just depends - in an ideal world your offense is so good you don't NEED a QB who is a big running threat - think Randall Cunningham or Mike Vick - even Deshaun Watson. there may not have been a lot of designed run plays with those quarterbacks, buta LB or safety always had to spy on them, and they could kill you with a scramble. I think that's your point?

A bit of a side note here...not really that. Call it one of those observations that may or may not mean a damn thing.

We know Hurts was too quick to pull the ball down and take off running last year. We've agreed it's understandable and we've also agreed as to why it happened as often as it did.

What I find interesting is Watson, who has a lot more experience than Jalen, ran the ball @25 fewer times last season. Last years's Heisman winner, while only a sophomore, ran the ball almost 70 more times than Jalen (in two fewer games.) To add more confusion on the role of a running QB in today's game if we look at the most prolific passing offense last season (TTU,) McHomes had around 35 fewer carries/runs on the season.

Outside of the injury concerns with a running quarterback I don't have an issue with a quarterback who has a lot of running ability. What really bothers me is having to rely on a quarterback to run in situations like third down. It's my opinion, Louisville's offense couldn't have had any success without Jackson running. At Clemson with Watson while I see DW running as an integral part of their offense I don't see it as a necessity to win.

A note from Rodney Orr on the quarterbacks.

Hurts has been a hot topic here the last few days. I was told that he had "great" practice on Tuesday – maybe his best day in a while. He looked very good, I'm told, in every aspect. Keep in mind that in some of the practices/scrimmages this spring, Hurts was somewhat limited in what he could do because of what the staff wanted to accomplish in those practices. He's had a very good spring. And, as previously noted, both of the freshmen, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones, have shown considerable promise.

If Hurts becomes a passer.....able to read Ds....get ball out quickly....not be tentative...
His running will be dynamic....tams will have to stay in zone Ds to not have to turn their backs to QB...
Recievers flying down field.....is it Sept yet?

Saban blames Hurts issues on coaching

According to his head coach Nick Saban, Hurts’ downturn in production shouldn’t be put on the young quarterback. Instead, Saban argues, Hurts’ slide should be put on the coaching staff. During his Thursday interview on JOX FM The Opening Drive, Saban claims Alabama ā€œprotectedā€ Hurts instead of ā€œdevelopedā€ him during the season.

ā€œI think we protected him a little bit last year and it might have… it didn’t enhance his development,ā€ Saban said on the air. ā€œSometimes later in the year, when people played us in a way that he needed to be able to throw the ball, we may not have been as efficient as we would have liked him to been. That was probably our fault as coaches because we didn’t really… we protected him instead of developed him as a young player. The goal this spring, and certainly before next season, is that we can create more balance by being a better passing team, to go along with what we are able to do with our feet as a quarterback.ā€

bradenob, I can think of several reasons why Hurts shouldn't fun but 3-4 times a game if that much.
1. Higher risk of injury the more he runs
2. A backfield full of 5 star players ( 3 star Jacobs may be the best all around rb on our team and my favorite at this time )
3. Hopefully, let his called running plays become more of a surprise rather than an expectation by the defense.
In my opinion right or wrong, the qb position isn't unlike the point guard in basketball. The leader of the offense tasked with gettng the ball into the hands of his play makers and shooting ( or running just enough to keep the defense honest or guessing ). We have play makers 2 and 3 deep at every skill position. So I believe it is smarter to use those players and not put your number 1 qb at greater risk with so many called runs.

And I do not disagree - my response to your earlier point was implying the same as you - it would be better to have a few key runs (3-4) and then be able to SCRAMBLE for a first down when you need to, rather than calling as many runs as were called for Jalen last year.

To Terry's point, it's a good sign to see a QB like D Watson running LESS as he improves. He should run less for reasons #1 and 3 that you enumerate above.

But I will say this - scam Newton was a nightmare to deal with because he could immediately get you 6 yards on an RPO or a veer-type read - you had to account for him every play and it made defenses more susceptible - in that way, it makes your 2nd point a bit moot.

I get your legitiment point about Newton, but can we agree there is only one scammer? Many have said he is a once in a life time qb, what with his size speed and passing skill. Attributes for the most part unheard of in college and has played pretty well in the NFL. But I don't see him lasting very much longer in the league as defenses have figured him out and laying some pretty hard licks on him. I don't think he has the heart to last three more years. I have been wrong before and might be wrong about him. But Hurts has a long way to go to be as good as ole scammer.

I'm a little lost here as well. Who are you getting JPW confused with here? The only QB I can think of that has a skill set similar to Jalen is Tyler—and that's like a distant cousin type of comparison.

IDK I guess hes saying since JPW wasnt a statue in the pocket they are similar lol Id say Blake is the most similar, minus the arm strength.
