Itās not good for the game, itās not good for the teams and quite frankly itās not good for the overwhelming vast majority of players. The transfer portal along with NIL payments to players will drastically change college sports ... and absolutely not for the better. Once again, politicians and administrators implement something thatās politically correct without thinking about all of the unintended consequences.
I only know about UGAās basketball team. Theyāve had 9 players enter the portal since the end of the season. They only have one starter who didnāt enter the portal ... one! Their top 2020 recruit, second leading scorer and All-SEC Freshman KD Johnson announced his decision to leave yesterday. Itās like a fire sale. So, their coach, Tom Crean is bringing in transfer portal guys to replace them but on paper it looks like a huge drop in talent. Sports talk radio in Atlanta is filled with pup fans saying Tom Crean has to be fired. He says itās just the new reality in college basketball. Heās right and it will make it impossible for a coach to discipline a player.
When you combine the ability of one and done with the transfer portal and the NIL debacle thatās coming, college basketball in particular is in serious trouble.
Have a friend that is an Indiana fan and he was high on Crean when he first arrived but did not take long for the Indiana fans to realize he is a mediocre coach. If you know what you are doing and the players have confidence in you there is no transfer portal action regarding 9 players leaving. Sorry some kids not getting playing time might happen in a solid program but not 9 players. The response that this is the new reality is laughable.
This one year of transferring without having to sit out a year is devastating. Hopefully, someone will get some common sense (I know not that common) and put a stop to this insanity.
I have not problem if a student wants to transfer but I do feel you must sit a year.
