1- you had better be a fantastic player.........I mean a starter at very, very good HS team

2- You have to have a connection with the college........someone the HC respects

3- If given a chance to physically try out, you need to do something in the "WOW" category....be very, very impressive.

4- You still have to have good grades and solid educational skills.

A little insight into the life of a walk-on. Rayford paints a great picture for those wondering about what it's like to walk-on at the University of Alabama.

I sit in front of Rayford's family. They were all going crazy when Rayford got in the game. I admire guys like him. So many hours of practice and workouts without so much glory. Then again, him describing coming out of the tunnel was pretty glorious. Not many will experience what he did star or not.

I went through the process over 20 years ago. It is hard work, but I wouldn't trade a moment for the experiences and friendships that I made. I came along before the 105 man roster and basically any "breathing" body could come in the Spring. I was invited out of high school after suffering a shoulder injury my last year. Those "fresh" bodies in Spring were weeded out pretty quick as soon as the conditioning started. For 2 years, I put in those long hours of lifting, meetings, class, practice, and studying. Eventually, I left because my grades were suffering and Mom and Dad didn't pay for me to make Cs. I will never forget those times and I am always proud to say that I was a walk on at The University of Alabama.
