I remember him getting torched on message boards after making the change from wide receiver. He's basically becoming a shut-down corner - notice how little you've seen of him in the 1st 2 games - teams aren't trying him as much. He played nearly flawlessly last night & was a big part in shutting down Metcalf after his 1st big catch. VERY IMPRESSIVE.

Coach Saban told Holley after the game that after the first rebel score they made a defensive adjustment. What adjustment was that coach? We put in another player. Goodbye Saivion Smith, hello Patrick Surtain and at 6'2" he came in and proceeded to shut down D.K. Metcalf the rest of the way. Diggs was indeed solid as well and the ball he batted away was a sure TD. I think that play really settled our young DBs down.

How did Hootie Jones start ahead of Deionte Thompson last season? Deionte is playing at an All-World level and is letting our young group play tight to their man and with confidence. This guy is going to be the best cover safety during the Saban era.

The offense is always going to get the bulk of the love but our defense has already grown up a ton.

Smith slowed halfway through the route thinking there was no play. Had he stayed “at speed” it’s not a TD and maybe not even a catch. Was most likely a very good learning experience hit him.

This group of DBs are already getting salty out there. Diggs and Surtain on the corners just seem like the way to go. Putting Carter back at the star was good to see and now let's see them grow up together. Surtain can easily transition to star if need be and Smith will keep getting a lot of reps with the nickel and dime we'll be playing this season.

I think Diggs was on Brown, who is the best receiver actually, and did get pretty much shut down this game.

Diggs & Thompson are the bright spots of our secondary. They have more experience in the program & it seems like they have the scheme down thus they are playing more instinctively. It's good to see.

it seemed like to me that the td pass pissed them off and they got together and decided not to let anything else, like that, happen the rest of the night.

yes, there were some pretty big passes from their qb, but they never really threatened again.

according to Saban in his presser, he put Diggs on Metcalf part of the time (along with Surtain)

He switched out because of the size issue. Smith was too small to properly jam the dude. He did not say anything about improper technique(although that will probably be discussed in private today). Diggs and Thompson both are playing like multi year starters. Surtain showed flashes but he also showed a couple of lapses. He will get there eventually, dude has too much talent, just needs to work on his quick decisions.

I said in good, bad, ugly that it was Diggs' coming out party. They tried him on two deep balls and both times, in man-to-man, he batted away the passes with a beautiful PBU. His speed and length is going to give him a chance to be able to run with any receiver in the country and knock away passes (or get picks). I got a feeling by the end of the year we will hear his name less and less because teams are not even going to bother looking that way.

I've been getting has back for two years now. You're right, a lot of people trashed him, but I always saw he wasn't as bad as folks attempted to make him. Sure, he lost out to a fifth year senior walk on, but he was always servicable, at a new position, and now that he has learned a few things he is zhowing how good some of us have said he was. I'm proud of him big time. Can't wait to see if he can continue this upward trajectory.
