🏈 Hot Corner: It's time for Alabama, Auburn to reconsider ODK Trophy timing

Interesting way Don closes this piece.

There's nothing wrong with awarding this trophy, but perhaps the time has come to reconsider the timing. If college basketball is to regain the lofty status it once enjoyed in this state, perhaps it's time to let the basketball programs stand on their own.
Can't an Alabama-Auburn game attract a good crowd without being propped up by a football celebration?

When Auburn recently won six consecutive Iron Bowls, Coleman Coliseum still was packed for Auburn games even without a football trophy presentation.
Here's a radical thought: Present the ODK Sportsmanship Trophy after the Iron Bowl. That would be sweet after a victory at home. It might be even sweeter after a victory on the road.

Yes, he's an Bama beat writer. But, there is a significant "dig" at Auburn's basketball program and attendance.

I have to say, presenting the ODK trophy after the game? I can see good and bad in that theory.

You can bet it was indeed a "dig" at the Barn. If they didn't have their celebration going on, there wouldn't have been 4,000 in the stands. You can bet that half of those would have only been there for the ODK Trophy too.

As far as presenting the trophy after the game, I agree that there is some good and bad to it. The bad being an all out brawl afterwards when one team goes storming across the field and grabs the trophy like they always do in the Big 1?

All out brawl would be certain. NO DOUBT. They almost break out w/o any special celebration after the game... But the only thing is, I just LOVE having the other school's student body president sing the winning school's fight song, so as long as they keep that tradition (just doing it after the game) maybe this is a good idea...

I can't say I'm surprised you said that...it was the first thing that crossed my mind when I moved this thread here yesterday. Hell, I'm still ticked of at "Big Red" for the shot he took at an Auburn player his last year. A lot of emotional battles are played out in this game.

Having seen Auburn's Student Body President slaughter our song on more than one occasion...the song means absolutely zero to me anymore. The sportsmanship aspect of the ODK trophy—and the luster associated with it—was lost decades ago.

I'm done with it all as well. I know I'll sound childish here, but I'm sick of the mean spiritedness coming from Auburn. There is no sportsmanship coming from that part of the state. It started with Tubby holding up fingers and continues with players blowing kisses and covering their mouths. Internet boards and recruiting "experts" gloat with predictions of stealing our commitments. The hate is stronger now than ever. Last I checked our players act with integrity and give credit where credit is due. Last I checked our staff doesn't use negative recruiting tactics and doesn't paint untrue pictures to starry-eyed recruits. I'm just tired of the right way vs. the "throw it all in their face" way. Just had to share that with y'all.

Here, here!

Both school's show a bit hatred towards each other not just Auburn. Have you seen some of the gameday shirts that come out of T-town?? Although I have never paid any attention to what comes out of the part of the state where Auburn is located it can't be too terribly worse than some of the things that come out Tuscaloosa. Heck, all you have to do is sit at BDS and listen to the crowd sing "Rammer Jammer" at the other team to see no further proof (although that tradition doesn't bother me).
