if Coach Bryant had had the health to stay in the game instead of retire when he did, would our Board of Trustees been calling for his retirement later on like the BOT has at FSU?

I love Coach Bowden and was recruited by him to FSU but I do believe the man has stayed a little too long. He created that program and gave it the mystique that it has had. My heart says let the man call it a career when he's ready to leave but the football fan says he should've eased off into the sunset about 3-4 years ago.

.

There were a couple of instances where the fans were saying he needed to move on. So, knowing who we have on the BOT now, I'd say the chances are high our Board, and fans, would be doing the same thing FSU did.

That was my thinking too Terry. It's sad that often times we have the mentality of "what have you done for me lately?" I don't see the situation getting any better there at FSU anytime soon.

Ditto. There's always been talk (even from the most ardent of Coach Bryant's fans) that in the latter years Coach was little more than a figure head, and had very little real responsibility. In a perfect world Coach Bryant would have stepped down and slid into the AD slot several years earlier.

I don't normally promote anything Pat Dye says but if anyone has iTunes they should go back to Finebaum's Monday show and listen to what Dye said. When asked about the Bowden situation he said that he felt like Paterno was in the same boat and that Coach Bryant's situation was similar. When a coach reaches a certain point (in age) he just doesn't have the energy that a younger man would and just can't recruit at the same level, not to mention, devote the time needed in coaching.

"A head coach is at the mercy of his staff". In Bowden's case the staff appears to be in disarray, while Paterno has a staff that still functions with cohesiveness, even though Paterno is essentially nothing more than a figure head. That's the only real difference.

Yea...He needs to move on and let new blood in. Its time for a change. As for the Board calling for Bears retirement.....Us Bama folk "expect / demand" alot from the football program..whether right or wrong..thats just the way it is. To go through an extended period of time with no conference / national championships would certainly bring out alot of grumbling..regardless of who the coach is IMO. I have always liked and respected Coach Bowden.....I think he is a class act..but there is a time to move on.

I would rather take for granted you paraphrased this well than listen to anything related to Finbuam BS show crap.

Chopper good post.

TP you are spot on with yours as well. I was only 10 years old when Coach Bryant retired, but I remember it fairly well. One of my workmates was at UofA from 78-81. He said that he remembers specifically the ranting of folks saying that he was too old and that the game had "passed him by".

On a side note about 4-5 years ago ESPN did a piece on Bowden and Paterno and how long this could go on. Spoke about age and how folks are healthier at older ages, etc. They had done a study on coaches over the age of 60 and how their wins fell off after the age of 60 and then how it was almost exponential at age 62-65 at the rate of losing games.

So to answer your question uagrad93. Yes without a doubt it would go on. Folks this day and age are more impatient than they have ever been.

I think coaches like Bryant, Paterno, and Bowden should choose when they leave. FSU was nothing more than a women's college before Bowden got there. He made them what they are today. Do the FSU fans think they'll be any better once Jimbo is the HC?

Do you have your dog put down just because they reach age 10?

Cory

No, but I might take him off guard duty for a younger dog. For obvious reasons. Nobody is talking about putting down Bowden either. Just knowing when to say when in any instances is a wise thing and when was several years ago for Bowden.:a:

IMO they shouldnt have announced that Jimbo will be the next HC
now you have a bunch of ass.coaches down there that dont know if they will even be a coach at FSU next year.Or the next .You know that hurts every aspect of the process ,recruiting ETC.

I know if my boss told me in my work place that he was retiring but didnt know when and someone else was taking over the bizz.
that will probably hire all new employees
Iwould be in the '' looking out for my familys future mode'' Which would
def. distract from the task at hand.
Just saw on t.v. that they are fist fighting each other down there
and Jimbo was involved ?
