A snippet from an article where GoRout is pitching UM to buy their product:

"Every college football program in the country has certain bottlenecks when it comes to practice," GoRout.com CEO Mike Rolih told the Free Press. "When you're Michigan and you're getting ready to play Ohio State and they're spreading you out and going to run some tempo, how do you replicate that effectively while still getting your reps in practice? With our system, you can. Instead of organizing, the guys don't have to come back to the huddle; everybody's got a display on."

According to the other comments from Rolih to the Free Press, the devices will be particularly helpful in allowing the scout team to quickly learn and execute the plays necessary to mimic the upcoming opposition. Coaches will be able to upload the plays into the devices instead of running around with big play cards and players will be able to move faster on the practice field.

Problem is, until the NCAA allows it to be used during game time, I see it as a detriment. Much like Google has helped to ruin my memory, since it has become a crutch that I can always look something up. Using something in practice, then using something else entirely during an actual game, seems counter-productive.

Not counter productive when you can slip this on your kids that are running your opposing teams plays for the week. We used to have the flash cards in HS and even in college. The problem was, some dumbass would always screw it up and line up wrong or run the wrong route, or even block wrong. In HS, they have now put practices on the clock and are minimized in time on the field. They only get so many hours a day and only hit on certain days, etc. If you are having to spend 25 minutes to run 7 plays because you have kids that can't give you a proper look, this would be a lifesaver.

It's designed for scout team work—at least that was my impression.

For that, it should be fine, as long as the starters are not using it for their side. From the little snippets posted in the OP though, it mentioned everyone using it. There is where the counter-productive part comes into play.
