I am watching MNF and just wanted to ask you guys, have you noticed the recent trend in College of kids wearing those new ugly Riddell helments with the hideous facemasks? Tebow wears one and Julio wears a different version. Now take a look at the Cowboys or most NFL teams, they wear traditional helmets and facemasks. Why the sudden trend in College? Thanks!

I'm not sure what you're referring to as far as the "hideous" facemasks, but Riddell is about as traditional as helmets get. I never wore anything different growing up and most of the teams we played wore them as well.

You need to fill me in on what you're talking about.

The Riddell Revolution helmet, it's supposed to reduce the risk of concussion.

If you look closely, you'll see that there are actually three different shells the team is using this year. All of them are designed to help prevent concussions (as has been mentioned) but do differ in a few other areas.

I read about this...but, can't recall how they differ from each other off the top of my head.

I think they're pretty cool looking, myself. I'd rather things like protective gear be on the cutting edge of technology, if not, they'd all still be wearing those leather skull caps!

I do not have the time to devote the proper attention to the point of cutting edge technology versus leather skull caps, so take this as an incomplete presentation.

But, the cutting edge technology of helmets has in my opinion actually increased the risks of head and neck trauma in football instead of decreasing it. Other factors are in play (size and speed of the participants), but the more helmets are made to prevent head injuries the more the helmet becomes a weapon.

In the days of leather skull caps, players were taught, and learned, to NEVER lead with the crown of your head. The consequences were far too harsh - and immediate.

I really would like to know you opinion on this: Why are a growing majority of college players wearing the new helmets (Tebow) while at the same time, most of the professionals are wearing the traditional helmets, like the one Deadrick wears? Seems to me the kids in college would try to emulate the look of the pros?

One of the best helmets I have come across are the old Bike Air ones that are inflatable. In my limited experiences, they provided great shock
absorption.

It comes down to comfort as well with these new helmets. They are so much lighter as opposed to the old Riddell or BIKE AIR that felt like they weighed 30-40 lbs. Eventually it comes down to the fit and does a player have a history of concussions.

Throughout High School I played in the regular style Riddell helmet until my Senior year(2005) when the our AD bought us the new Revolution style helmets and I was very skeptical until I went out to practice the first time and it was 10X lighter and I never had the post football game headache that was a constant with the old helmets. I also played one year of ball at Bellhaven where I actually had to buy my own helmet and let the university paint it green and honestly have no idea why anyone would wear those old ones.

Another good reason to wear the Revolutions is BECAUSE PEYTON DOES!!!!
