Is Alabama's AJ McCarron a Heisman contender? Past winner Desmond Howard, odds makers say yes

Surveying the Heisman odds, polls and asking a former winner about AJ McCarron's odds at winning.

Read More Here...
With a month left in the season, Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron isn't a Heisman Trophy front-runner.

But he's in the conversation.

Handicapper Danny Sheridan says McCarron is tied for the No. 3 choice with Johnny Manziel as 15:1 shots. Oregon's Marcus Mariota is the 1:1 favorite followed by Florida State's Jameis Winston at 7:5.

In Bovada's odds updated Tuesday, McCarron is the fourth choice. Mariota again is the favorite at 2:3 followed by Winston (6:5), Manziel (14:1) and McCarron (16:1).

Before the season, McCarron was a 10:1 third choice on Bovada.

USA Today's poll
of more than two dozen Heisman voters has McCarron fourth overall and receiving six third-place votes. Mariota was the front-runner there too.

Before last week's games, McCarron was not receiving any votes from the 10 balloters surveyed by HeismanPundit.com

Another voter, Paul Finebaum, said he'd vote for Manziel if the ballots were due last weekend.

ESPN's Desmond Howard, the 1991 Heisman Trophy winner, told AL.com he's high on McCarron being part of the conversation.

"He should definitely be in the mix," Howard said. "You talk Mariota, you talk Winston, I think he should be the third guy you talk about. I made a strong case for him on our show this past Saturday."

Not a snowballs chance in hell. He is getting no attention whatsoever from the media. I remember the other day they had him on the Top 4 list on ESPN and he was the only one they didnt even talk about. The same list came up later in the show and he still was never even mentioned. In fact the only person I've even heard say his name in regards to the Heisman has been Lou Holtz believe it or not. Hes actually been slightly campaigning for it. But AJ doesn't care and as long as we keep winning none of us should either.

Only way I see it happening is if AJ has a MONSTER game against LSU and Auburn.

Sure he has a shot. He started the season slow, but hasn't thrown and INT in the last four games. He didn't have good completion numbers vs. VT. But realistically, winning a national championship and "leading" the team to a NC in a tough game will certainly get him to NYC.

All it is, is a beauty contest. AJ isn't flash and dash, so therefore, he isn't going to get the Heisman nor will he go to NYC as a finalist. If we didn't have the stable of backs to hand off to, or AJ was at the throttle of an "air raid" type of offense, then he would be the favorite to win it and would probably be back to defend it as well. He puts up record stats for his team and he tacks on wins, and adds rings to his collection. I wouldn't replace AJ with ANY of the others on the list!

Winston is running away with it, in my opinion.

I agree. I like what Mariota does, but Winston has just exploded and put FSU in the national title conversation. Plus he is a frosh which is always a fun storyline. I watched his first game versus Pitt this year, and I knew I was watching something special.

Also can we talk about how FSU's closest game so far this season was with .. BOSTON COLLEGE?
