🏈 Has anyone else lost a little bit of faith in Coach McElwain?

I am still riding the fence on him for this year. I know the line has been broken down by defenses with 2 weeks to prepare. I see them reading our offense though.

I am not saying we should get rid of him yet, but it just seems like even I can call the play we are about to try to execute. If I can, you know an SEC Defensive Coordinator can.

Thoughts?

To me we very rarely are hitting all cylinders. It seems we can't find a happy median between trying to force things to much and not forcing things enough. We're either doing one or the other.

I've been very underwhelmed this year by the play calling.

Don't throw in the towel just yet. If AJ is as good as advertised and your o-line matures your offense will be fantastic. Playcalling this year is limited by inexperienced and poor offensive line play. He's trying to keep it simple because of the pass rush that has been getting through.

If Ingram and Richardson come back next year and your o-line plays well and playcalling still sucks then can him. Otherwise, you guys have a good one.

I was pretty much feeling the same way until the near the end of the 2nd quarter.

Coach Mac started calling less plays (in particular run plays) up the middle. It was obvious our O-line was not getting any push. Once that was clear we started doing more sweeps, tosses sweeps, & passes.

Look what happens when we put Mark out on the edge in the bubble screen w/ Julio blocking as well as Julio's run...both TD's. So I have to tip my hat for some mid game adjustments.

:td: I would be more happy with a few more sweeps myself. Why not use ingram, trent, maze and julio more on the outside? Lately, all the runnin up the gut hasnt got as much. Hit em with a few sweeps and pop more of the deep ball. We have the guys to go up and get it.

Question. Very first possession, first snap of ball game Mark Ingram is out wide in a WR set. No one in backfield to pass protect and Greg under center. What exactly were they trying to do? I don't get stuff like that. At best wouldn't you want Greg in the pistol position? And Mark as a wideout?

As you remember we went no huddle on that first series. The idea of the five wides is to create single coverage and/or mismatch situation, such as a lb trying to cover Mark in space. Just a different look and tempo that the aubies will have to prepare for.

The up-tempo was not a McElwain thing, I believe. I think that was a "Saban" thing. Anyone with both of their eyes open can see that our offense was stagnating and teams were just sitting in, waiting to tee off on us. Pick up the pace, don't let the other team get such a long look at our formation, or let them rest. Get the ball to the outside, and show them that we will go downfield on them.

Guys, honestly, I'm more concerned with the defense. While they did some good things against our last several opponents since getting torched by South Carolina, that second half of LSU and just the lapses in mental concentration are making me very nervous.

Alabama has won a boatload of games with only an average offense. But we don't win nearly as often with a defense that takes plays off.

We clearly haven't prepared for a passing attack all year; I doubt we start now.
