While Harbaugh coached at Stanford, he faced Rick Neuheisel and UCLA on occasion. Neuheisel, now a CBS analyst, was on the
Dan Patrick Show Thursday and was asked about a famous handshake incident he had with Harbaugh.
āThey won 24-16 and weāre driving trying to get the tying score and he comes across to shake hands ā and this is
before he did it to (former Detroit Lions coach) Jim Schwartz, by the way ā and he just slaps my hand and (says) āWhatād you think about that, Ricky?'ā Neuheisel said. āAnd Iām like, Did that just happen? I mean who does that?ā
Neuheisel didnāt say anything to Harbaugh. He was in shock.
āI was literally like, Who does that?
āHe gets so lost in the competition. I mean, he competes at everything
In a
Bleacher Report feature story published earlier this week, Frank Beamer recalled an awkward moment with Harbaugh when Stanford played Virginia Tech in the 2010 Orange Bowl. A few days before the game, Beamer and Harbaugh were at an event in Miami and started talking.
āJim says over and over how much respect he has for Georgia Tech. He must have said it five times. Iām just looking at him like, āAre you serious?ā
āFinally, Iām joking with him and I say I canāt wait to tell my team that you called us Georgia Tech. Because, you know, weāre Virginia Tech.ā
Harbaugh then gave Beamer a firey, uncomfortable stare.
āWell,ā Harbaugh said, according to Beamer. āI canāt wait to tell my players that you said you were going to play Samford, not Stanford!ā He then turned and walked away.
