🏈 Greg and AJ

I'd be fine with AJ taking over. McElroy hasn't showed me much in the way of actually being able to make a play. He definitely protects the ball which is crucial.

Yea because that last drive against Auburn and the whole SEC Championship doesn't count right? Jesus, some fans can only remember the last game and that's it. :fight:I wonder how many fans were saying stuff like that after the '92 National Title game. And Barker actually turned the ball over twice! smh

I'll be honest with you guys. Greg's stats didn't bother me in the title game one bit. I understood the play calling in the 3rd and our ground game was punishing. He was needed to manage the game for us to win and he did.

Well, I was not pleased generally with his play - but learning about the ribs mostly excused most of his effort.

But, even in the midst of what was not much of a game, McElroy stepped up huge with that third down pass for a first down on the fourth quarter drive where we marched the ball off our goal line to an eventual FG opportunity.

Even though Tiffin missed the kick, and Texas went down the field to score, that drive (even though it was added by two UT penalties) gave our defense a break and consumed some time. If nothing else, it allowed us to catch our breath. I really think if we punt the ball from our 20 yard-line there and we are in real trouble.

So, a little 8-yard pass was a HUGE play in my opinion.

Alagator, I had to look at it from a coaching perspective and not from the fan perspective or I would've lost my mind. I coached high school ball for 13 years and coached of all positions, the quarterbacks. I had to look at the field position and the context of the situation to keep my sanity. The third down throw for the first down on the eventual field goal miss was a "huge" play to me just as you stated.

I know we will possibly be hearing alot about these two leading up to next season. I was asked today by a Barner buddy if I thought AJ had a chance at starting....my responce was...absolutely he has a chance....just not much of one. I cant see taking a QB that has went undefeated and won a NC and placing him on the bench.....Insane would be my first thought. He is convinced we will have a controversy problem....and I couldnt disagree more....I think AJ is very smart and patient...atleast thats how it appears from the outside looking in. Any thoughts ?

Don't ever take a barner seriously.

But for having a bad defense, the single biggest concern for an SEC team going into a season is having a first year QB. Greg McElroy was a concern and proved to be the exception in proving that he is a leader among Champions. Logic says that he will be even better next year.

This said, LBS's thoughts are that there is no feasible chance that a first-start A.J. will beat out the Undefeated, defending national champion GMaC.

It simply will not happen.

I am not aware of Saban ever being accused of playing one player over another for any reason other than the ability of whichever player to contribute toward victory and whichever player contributes the most toward team unity.

So. IF McCarron does start or play over McElroy, then it will be because a RS Freshman has demonstrated he is better able to lead our team to a championship than is a 5th-year Senior who just produced a 14-0 record and a BCS Championship.

That is a "controversy" I will take all day and night long.

And so would your Barner friend if he/she would be honest with you.
