Maybe I have not been around for as much football as I thought I had, but I thought for certain the FG in the Tennessee game (circa 1990) would have made it.
RECAP (as LBS remembers)
Close game with the Vols driving to ice the game with a FG in Knoxville. The kick is blocked by a Bama DL (sorry, can't remember who to credit), the ball actually striking our guy in the facemask. [Being struck in the facemask is essential to this considering that it is likely the hardest substance on the entire field, and the outcome needed the hardest substance.] The ball deflected backward, tumbling roughly 25 yards in the Mother of All Alabama Bounces. Bama with one snap to make magic happen, kicks a FG (Phillip Doyle, I believe) to squeeke out a win. Neiland Stadium goes from rocking celebration to dead quiet in two quick snaps.
No doubt about that knuckle ball through the uprights was ulgy and beautiful all at the same time. As for the FG in the 90 UT game, it was Stacey Harrison blocking it with his facemask coming off the edge.
