First Meeting: On Dec. 19, 1959, Penn State knocked off Alabama 7-0 in the inaugural Liberty Bowl in frigid Philadelphia. The Nittany Lions scored the winning touchdown on a fake field goal near the end of the first half, and Alabama struggled offensively for much of the game. Winning the post-season invitation represented a significant achievement for second-year Tide head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant—an important milepost on the way to the 1961 national championship and all the years of dominance to follow.
