šŸˆ GMac: ā€œI will make more $ over the course of my lifetime by going to Alabama then Alabama made off of me ā€¦ā€

One has to factor in the intellect of each individual, and McElroy is at the top end of that scale. Lets be honest as well, he was not a top high end athlete like Julio or Ingram that he shared rge same huddle with. He was good, but not a superstar, which is a majority of athletes. I say this because while he did make NFL money for a couple of years, it wasn't enough to retire on forever, so he used his education and time within the program to earn a position making good sums of money broadcasting. A lot of guys will not have this ability between the ears or the drive to maximize their opportunities, but having a free education and access to the inner happenings of a program is invaluable.

I'd say 80% of these guys on the roster make no money for the university. That may be low considering. Even some guys seeing playing time don't. It's Saban, Julio, Tua, Ingram, Richardson, Tua, Hurts, Cooper, Henry, Mac, Devonta, Bryce, Najee kind of guys making the money for Alabama. Not an interior offensive or defensive lineman.

So yes, I agree with McElroy that if you broke it down by athlete they make more on average off going to their school than their school makes off of them specifically.

We watch Alabama as a team. The entire team earns for the program, not just your big names. Let’s see any superstar be a superstar without a supporting cast.

I have stated this on here before, but goes along with this conversation. I work in healthcare. I have met/worked with several clinical reps that were nothing more than tackling dummies on the 92 scout team. Some of them got to play in mop up duty in blow out games against rooty-poots.

Those guys have literally made millions of dollars working for large companies Boston Scientific, St Jude Medical, Medtronic, etc. Because they had a ring and could go in and sweet talk the doctors.

Heck Brandon Cox that was at Auburn had a non-medical business degree, but was an orthopedic clinical rep. (not sure if he still is)

Bottom line, if you just take your education serious enough, you can use the UA degree and your ring to parlay it into some big money.

I would agree with this and I was just a walk on with an SEC ring! That ring opened a lot of doors and gave me opportunities to better myself.

That's all fine and dandy, but that's not my point. If you put a jersey in front of your kid with a #9 for Bryce Young or a #54 Kyle Flood Jr (just picked a random guy on the roster and hate even adding a name and mean zero slight to him), which is he going to choose? Who is put on the magazines and the programs? Who has the longer lines on Fan Day for signatures? Who has the NIL deals and why? You are not wrong that any player on that team gains praise from us fans, but please don't be naive to think you aren't watching the superstars more than the role players. I did not mean this as anything negative, simply stating that the university isn't making money on a 3rd stringer like the broad assumption is that they make money off of athletes and all the athlete gets is a free education.

Lot of X players are security guards...bouncers...warehouse workerstoo...
Takes more than have worn a popular jersey number...

Give these guys some credit...they learned hard work...on-the field....pays off .in the business office..the # they wore may open adoor...but it takes more than that to sustain success...

Applys to our X military guys and gals too.....
Why employers jump at-a chance to hire them.....opens doors...teaches responsibilities....

Interesting take & article!

I think sometimes the world forgets how much it costs to go to college. Now a days, with a "cost of attendance" stipend, these kids are getting upwards of 60-100K in dollar value a year for school. Do the math in 4 years, and it takes a special talent to make that type of $ for their program above a like talent/replacement on the roster.

I suppose the TV contracts are ultimately what brings in the most $$, so the overall conference level of play is very important. The more eyes on the product the more $ per ad, the bigger the contract, etc.

But these schools are offering so much value in scholarships and now off field & graduate opportunities, it's a nice set up for anyone to have 4+ years of a scholarship. I still believe they should try to get as much as they can because I generally believe in getting the most out of your value, but 2 things can be true at once. Because of our countries hunger for great sports, this skill set happens to be extremely valuable. It's also fair to point out some guys/gals aren't coming close to financially returning the value of their scholarship... Which is likely the case in most sports outside of CF & CB.
