🏈 Gary Danielson explains Saturday's broadcast (the best he can)

It was a fantastic segment. I thought his comments on a playoff and how the SEC and ESPN might be the catalysts were the most intriguing, though.

It reminded of what Keith (porkchop) had said about Gary in the past week. I feel he is about as honest as the day is long and even though I don't agree with everything he says and the Tebow talk goes beyond what it should, I think he does a good job overall and cares about the quality of product he produces.

Good stuff regarding the playoffs too.

I didn't like Danielson at first, but the more I listen to his broadcasts, the more I like him. The guy does as good or better job of breaking down a game than any other color man on TV.

I like Danielson just fine and I empathize with the uncomfortable position that he was obviously in during this interview, I can't get on board with his defense of Lundquist. If Lundquist loves the SEC as much as Danielson claims, he'd invest the required time in his show prep to make sure these so-called "little mistakes" are avoided.

Secondly, if this was one of Verne's "A Broadcasts," then it's probably time for Verne to consider retirement or it's at least time that CBS Sports replace the producer that is in Verne's ear who is responsible for telling him that he's called the wrong name four times in a row.

Danielson not knowing the players names is what bothers me. Other than that one thing he does not bother me, BUT that one thing drives me crazy.

I don't quite understand why people get so upset over Verne mis-pronouncing or calling out the wrong names. The guy does different teams almost every week, and some of those names would start running together on almost anyone.

Hell, Kenny Stabler who saw these guys and heard their names every week mis-pronounced over half the teams names when he was doing the color on the radio, and most people thought it funny.

Never was a big fan of Kenny while he was in the booth either. I think most people understood is was because Kenny was a mess/drunk in the booth(jmo). Danielson wants to be taken seriously. There is the difference to me.
I could care less about Vern. I have been ignoring what he says since the "throat slash" was blown all out of proportion in the Fla game.
Any serious announcer, broadcaster should know the names of the players that is their job and get paid to get it right. How hard is it for someone on the broadcast team to make sure they have the names right....apparently very difficult.

Danielson grows on you. He is very smart and knows football as good as anyone save Todd Blackledge. He shouldn't have to apologize for Verne. Good grief. Verne is one of the best announcers of our era.

Reminds me of a piece "Gump4Heisman" did back in August where he talks about this:

2) Undeservedly hating on college football TV announcers

"Did you hear that? Verne Lundquist is terrible. He just called Charles Scott 'Charles Lott.'"

OK, so Lundquist is old. So what? We all know what he meant. Is anyone actually getting confused out there? The same guy he just called 'Charles Scott' four consecutive times didn't all the sudden ILM-morph into Ronnie Lott's nephew.

So Brent Musberger can't remember your third-string platoon uber-red-shirt wideout's last name. So what? You forget **** all the time.

Remember that time you forgot your undershirt and sweated-thru at your cousin's wedding? Remember that time you forgot to remember that toothbrush you forgot? Remember that time you forgot to put some condoms in your back pocket in Miami and woke up the next Tuesday with a mushroom on your penis?

What, Lundquist didn't remember all the letters in somebody's name? Hell, you don't even remember all of last night. At one point, you slammed a tequila shot, poured salt on your tongue and licked a fat chick's arm while performing air guitar and swaying like Axl Rose.

OK, so you didn't do that. Not at all. But you could have. And you don't definitively remember that youdidn't do that. That's the real issue here.

Look, the SEC has 12 teams, each with 85-man rosters. For those of you keeping score at home, that's a pool of 1,020 strangers. And that's just one conference.

There are 119 Division 1 teams, making that 10,115 strangers. Dude-strangers, by the way. When you go out, you can't even remember one dude's name. Much less 10,115 dudes. Yea, you're better at remembering girls' names. Who with a cock and more balls than Lance Armstrong isn't?

We aren't talking you calling out 10,115 toothpicks, Rainman. We're talking you knowing 10,115 human beings, all with different names, some of them just plain ridiculous.

"And there's #82... Quantay Robinson."

Quantay? Really? That sounds like a a sci-fi arcade game from 1986. If that's your name, cool. But don't expect anyone, especially a 70-year old grandpa, to pronounce it right the first 34 times.

Sorry, I feel little sympathy for Danielson or Verne. This is not a high school football game. These guys absolutely BLEW this game every way you slice it and they are suppose to be CBS best crew...Then his only real excuse is, "hey we messed up a little, get over it" .........I think they both need to attend a broadcasting school for football announcing to get their head in the game......And stop worrying about what every football players family is involved in, namely Ingram. That comment had NOTHING to do with the game or the fact that Ingram is obviously having a great career at Bama.

I agree. I have to admit, Verne does get on my nerves from time to time, but I d rather listen to them than not see the game.

Just to piggyback on a couple of things that were said. I also like Danielson, although I can understand why some people do not. I've always like Vern too, but the thing is, he's really past the point of retirement IMHO. He might still do well calling something like golf, but he just can't keep up when it comes to the football games he's calling.

My biggest gripe; How in the world do you consistently get names wrong? With all the help Vern gets in the booth, how does it continue to happen game after game? I'm not even talking about the Fayetteville reference either. I can understand that maybe he and Danielson were talking about something regarding Arkansas and Vern just had a slip of the tongue. That happens. But he doesn't even know names of the players he's covering.

Is this incompetence, apathy or what? I have to think it's Vern just not having it anymore. I've always liked Lundquist, but maybe it's just time to start thinking about ending a long and distinguished career?

I really wish everyone would let it die. Lundquist wasn't trying to down Mark in anyway, he was just trying to get the story out there for those outside of the BAMA nation that don't know anything about the kid. I like them both but I did have to go to an old program once to make sure it was "Lorenzo" and not Lionel. He said it so many times he almost had me convinced I was wrong. Guys are going to mess up and maybe old Vern is past his prime. To me he is better than Pat Summerall that used to do alot of the NFL games when I was growing up.
