🏈 Gameday aTm Thread

Since some of you guys don't like Gary Danielson, I can't think of a better place to put this! :devilish:

Alabama vs. Texas A&M is one of Saturday’s marquee college football games . Gary Danielson, the college football analyst for CBS Sports who was a quarterback for the Lions and the Browns, spoke with The Quad about the game, and its two outstanding quarterbacks. The interview has been condensed and edited.

Johnny Manziel of A&M really reminds me of Drew Brees when he was at Purdue. Not only does he have to be able to throw short passes but he has to be able to run. The A&M line can’t give him the time to throw deep. He is not the passer Drew was, but he is a little better runner. He is like a switch hitter that is good from both sides of the plate — Mickey Mantle and Chipper Jones hit well from both sides. Johnny has learned to thrive in college by improving at both.

Alabama’s AJ McCarron has off-the-chart skills. He would have been comparable to those great Michigan quarterbacks — Elvis Grbac, Todd Collins, Brian Griese, Tom Brady, Jim Harbaugh — and produced those numbers if he played in that kind of offense. But he doesn’t have to.

Alabama is built like the New York Giants were last season. If the Giants had to shut down the run, they’d do that. The next week, they’d shut down the passing game. Alabama can beat you six different ways. They have way more options.

A&M has to play a perfect game Saturday, and I don’t see Alabama sleepwalking through this one. They got the bejeebers scared out of them last week against L.S.U. A&M would have to be brilliant to win.

I usually scoff at players with goofy nicknames, (a'la "Honey Badger") but this "Johnny Football" guy is pretty scary.

In my humble (sidewalk) opinion, I see three keys for us on defense. 1. Strong secondary play. (We had some gaping holes last week that LSU exploited over and over again.) 2. Apply defensive line pressure without over-pursueing. If the pass rush gets behind this kid in the pocket and he tucks and runs, he could run for a long time. 3. Take our best athlete on defense and shadow Manziel all day. Of course, I realize this strategy would be much easier executed with 12 or 14 players on defense, but I don't think we'll be able to get away with that.

It's comforting to know that the squad has a defensive strategy that has been crafted Saban and Smart to rely on and that they don't necessarily have to depend on mine. (lol)

Enjoy the game, my fellow Tiders. I have a lot of friends that are TAMU alums and I would like nothing better than to humiliate them all evening on Facebook. I'm counting on being "unfriended" by at least a half dozen people.

Roll Tide Roll.
