🏈 Game thread: Bama vs Wisconsin

Coker played well didn't make any costly mistakes. ....why pull him. But I would like to see something from Cooper in real game situation. Other than Coker being late on the deep throws....I'm ok for now....better get better by Olé Miss tho

What I saw:

Defense- Front seven is very good against the run. Maybe even excellent. Against the pass, we still don't get enough pressure with the front four consistently and Reuben is a liability in pass coverage. He's like Depriest, a step slow arriving. On the back end, some good some bad. More guys were in position to make plays tonight, but they didn't make enough plays. Is it a sin in Tuscaloosa to turn around and play the ball on a pass?? WTF? Do we even teach it? But overall, coverage was better. Stave was throwing lasers in the first half, some of those passes were indefensible.

Offense- All hail, King Henry. And the Drake is back too. I wish we would have gotten Harris involved a little earlier to get a true read on the kid. Not bad at mop up time, but the Badgers were sitting on the run and run blitzing like crazy so Harris was getting hit 3 yards in the backfield. OL was very good, opened good holes, and protected pretty well. That Wiskey defense is SEC caliber and was a good first test for the offense. The OL got a little sloppy at times, but it IS game 1. Receivers, we have loads of talent but it is green. Some of them need to grow up fast. OJ Howard sighting tonight. Has the light finally come on for OJ or will he still look like Tarzan and play like Jane? QB- saved this for last. Jake played a pretty good first game. He didn't make any big mistakes and he moved the ball effectively. Having said that, he is everything we said he was before: he's late with the ball, doesn't make quick decisions, and stares down his receivers. He plays like a freshman QB but he's not one. I don't mean to look like I'm down on the guy, but I'm not comfortable with him if the game is on the line. Those bad habits will cost him later on. I can give 2 examples of what I mean. On the post to Ridley, Ridley had separated from his man and had single coverage and was open. Coker was late with the ball, the DB closed the gap and the result was an incomplete pass instead of a TD. On the TD throw to Foster, Foster was crossing and was open a full 2 seconds before Jake delivered the ball. The result was still a touchdown because Robert was roaming free, but had the situation been different, that could have been costly. Bateman, what can you say? He came in and played well but with his hands tied as he wasn't allowed to throw downfield. Certainly more mobile than Jake. Not a fair test if that's what it was.

ST-WTF happened to JK Scott? Get Booby Williams away from him! NOW! Griffith is still the same mess he was last year. Can't rely on FG's at all. Might as well go for it on 4th down if it's longer than 30 yards. The return game was decent. No fumbles, no busted coverages.

Overall, a good win against an above average team. Plenty to work on to get better, but it is the first game so no surprises there. Let's gladly take the "W" and move on.

The Good:

-Derrick Henry looks terrific. He definitely has quicker feet, and just looks more trim. Clearly the speed is still there!

-Reggie Ragland might approach Mosley/McCLain territory by seasons end. He is special

-Rob Foster was doing the damn thing. Looks confident and explosive. Had a good nice blocks too

-The interior OL was awesome run blocking. Opened up a lot of nice holes

-OJ Howard looked like a part of the offense, and even made some blocks! Progress is good!

-Drake is back! Very electric. Did notice he was really quick to bounce outside... Would like to see him stick his nose in the hole every now and then

-Mullaney is the new Norwood!!!!

-Jon Allen had an awesome game. He's our best D Lineman (Since Pettway doesn't get as many snaps)

-Last but not least, Coker was pretty damn decent. Aside from the two slow motion sacks, he threw the ball well and didn't do anything stupid. His strength is clearly the intermediate passing game, as opposed to the screen and deep ball. Neither looks natural to him, but the intermediate throws looked great. Hopefully Kiffin plays to that as much as possible.

The Bad:

-PENALTIES. Holy Shit. The worst I can remember under Saban

-Secondary was average at best against what was not a great passing team. Just looked a lot like last year... Guys were either out of position or didn't make a play on the ball. Amazes me how they don't turn their head around on the sideline but it happens year after year.

-LB's aside from Ragland are sub par in pass coverage. Rueben is just too big to cover RB's 1 on 1, and SDH looks like a tweener without pass coverage skills. It could be helpful to teach a guy like Hootie or Harrison what to do in those situations, cause those LB's will continue to be exposed.

-Dillon Lee and Denzel Devall... Devall just doesn't do anything... Not sure how else to put it. Lee missed a few tackles and generally didn't make any plays.

-Defensive Line rotations. In the first half I only noticed Rashaan Evans in on 1 play. Tim Williams 0. I may have missed a few but they damn sure didn't play much on pass downs. Even Ryan Anderson got limited snaps. There were times we were lined up in a 4-3 look with Robinson at DE... I don't get it. Aside from Jon Allen there was no legit pass rush threat when it mattered. Pettway is our second best DL and barely plays... Hand and Tim Williams were basically mop up guys. I don't get it.

-Freshman DB's - Humphrey and Fitz struggled. To be expected, but I was hoping they would jump off the screen... Didn't see it, YET.

The Ugly:

-Griffith. It is what it is. Like I said, I no longer blame him.... I blame Saban for trotting him out there when he's clearly not getting it done. Did the same thing with Foster

-Backup OL - Holy shit that was bad! They were no resistance for Wisky DL

-Drake bitching at Kiffin for playing Henry more pissed me off. Then he put him in the next play and gave him the ball.... Hate to see that shit get rewarded.

-End of first half was pathetic. Between Saban tucking his tail and JK Scott's punt, we lucked out to not give up those points

-JK Scott. Did Herby say that he was struggling in fall camp? If so, FML.

All in All:

-Coker did better than I expected. If he can play that way and connect on a deep ball every now and then, we've got a chance. The slow sack decisions must improve also.

-Defense looked about the same as last year... Lots of zone in the secondary on passing downs with big windows and slow reaction. DL was good against the run but I don't see any change in the pass rush scheme, except a blitze or two from secondary guys. I was hoping for a dominant performance though, so tough to live up to that.

-Henry could easily win the Heisman. Love to see his hard work paying off. Kiffin needs to ride him until the wheels fall off.

-Thought Kiffin had some beautifully designed plays... Liked the creativity in the run game specifically.

-Team has a long way to go to be as good as our title teams, but that was a really good win. It will be up to the D and OL to dominate when it counts... Hopefully they answer the call.

Regarding other positions than PK, a Darwinian policy prevails: nobody starts without their performance record supporting that status. With PK, we get context-free statements of faith in future positive results and no indication that other players are even being evaluated for possible starter status. I don't get it.
